Anyone notice that the graphics got progressivly worse over development

first off your picture's resolution is off

second, bungie said that it didn't look like Halo

Well, I had the chance to play the leak at a friend's house today and I will say the graphics are very nice. It looks about as good as it's going to get on Xbox hardware. Glass shatters nicely, water looks very nice, and the textures are all nicely done.

It's a lot of fun =] I only played multiplayer though, not campaign. One good thing about it is the multiplayer level design is much better this time around. The maps are large and varied, with plenty of stuff to play with.

Uh Mith, that's not Halo.
Although the lack of improvement does sort of show in the way the sequel looks like the original.

They might've toned it down. The Xbox probably wasn't capable enough. Doom III looks pretty bad on the Xbox.

I'm not really sure why there's such a drastic change. Not like it matters though, unless you're a Halo hostile gamer looking to prove to others that the series does indeed suck. =]

It's a great looking game, trust me.

i pointed this out to one of my friends the other day! i knew i wasn't crazy as he claimed!!

they did, and i am sad. :(

No i think they are different because one is a CGI video and the other is in game footage. Not that they really are getting worse over development.

Wow, so that left image is the new halo? That looks like crap.

Doesn't matter though, I wouldn't buy it anyway.

even if the 02 used the xbox graphics it doesnt matter because its not in game footage. Its like comparing the cutscenes in warcraft 3 to the ingame visuals. Even top of the line computers would have trouble with the playing the 02 in actually gameplay.

the better looking one was a cinematic trailer, of course its gunna look way better. The newer one is just the in-game gfx.

Well, as you see, the hype engine fudged & used the PC to render their preview stuff.

Who here actually expected Halo2 to look so much better than the first when they're using the same hardware. That would be like trying to play HL2 on a TNT2.

PC always wins. =)

The 02 video looks worse than doom3 and farcry looks.

You can't expect Halo2 to be an improvement, even if they could improve the graphics more...it took them what? 2 years to make it?

First off the x02 announcement is not cgi, secondly all game development (bar pc games) start off with what theyd like to achieve and as time goes on everyone gets toned down to accomodate for action with a decent framerate.

Its the way of console development. Look @ Fable.

hi-res / low-res
pre-rendered / in-engine

i dont think you can really compare them

oh but ppl will ;) - and then just happen to add that pc games 'look' better (in their opinion) and that consoles are crap. It's just a crazy coincidence.

The irony is these same people complain of Halo fanboys in other threads :/

Well, the xbox wouldn't be able to give nice framerates in the right one anyway - MC is casting dynamic shadows there. So they dumped it down a bit - I guess.

The Right one IS NOT PRE-RENDERED! IT IS RENDERED IN REAL TIME ON AN XBOX!

I kid you not. However, it's comparable to a run in 3dmark03... It's not controllable, so they know what it going to happen, so it cna run smoothly.

if there is one thing that WoW has taught me it's, do not judge a game on it's graphics... (yeah I am obsessed with World of Warcraft right now, but you would be too if you were playing it)

the graphics do look worse (also they could have fixed that arm warping like that).. but the game still looks awesome, and I would rather play at a smoother rate and COOP than have dynamic lighting etc.

All I have to say is whether the right shot is pre-rendered or not...the left shot is a horrible example of Halo 2's graphics. I've seen much better in-game and cutscenes.

I'm not buying H2 for it's graphics anyway:)

Cheers

The right one, as sidewinder has said is IN-ENGINE.

Halo 2's engine is very powerful, but is limited by the xbox hardware. That's why they, bungie, themselves have mentioned that they had to TONE down the graphics.

Just imagine the FPS with the graphics on the right and 15 marines + elites + grunts on screen + vehicles = nightmare.

So their reason is justified.

the graphics of the leak hav many bugs and stuff like that

do someone has played the leak and the final game and can tell me if hav the same graphics?

I don't judge a game from its graphics. I played Neocron (another MMORPG - PvP centered though) for 2 years and it looks terrible...well, not terrible but nothing fancy (http://img96.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img96&image=shot69.jpg) but they should'nt even release anything related to halo2 like that when it does'nt even look half as good.

Game graphics are supposed to get better over time..look at any big game, they show screenshots when the idea is thought up and 2 years later the game actually is supposed to look even better. Not vice versa.

Do you think halo 2 could look that good if it was ported over to the computer?

yes. Judging from the time it took halo to port over to computer computers should be able to do that with ease.

they may be able to port it over quicker though.

Halo2 on PC could look that good but it won't. It will look like Halo2 on Xbox only with sharper textures and the option to remove all jaggies from the game.

It could look that good, however Halo 1 didn't do much better when it was ported to superior hardware.

Wasn't Halo PC's poor performance pretty much a case of a lack of time and resources? Gearbox had to put all their code changes through Bungie, and Bungie had a part in developing it as well, and that sucked up a lot of time... It's all on the Gearbox forums, I'm too lazy to pull it up now.

The point is, if Bungie is given the time and the resources, Halo 2 PC will almost definitely run more than acceptably.

I doubt they'll bother optimising it for the PC tbh, they're expecting by far the majority of their sales to come from the X-Box, and by the time they did actually change the engine and improved it to suit PC hardware Halo 2 will be out-dated anyway, just like Halo 1 was when it came out for the PC.

They'll probably just start working on Halo 3 and forget about Halo 2, let someone else handle it like they did last time.
