Okaaaaaay... every now and again, my hard drive "stutters". Usually it sounds like this:

"GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRP"

...and the little light more or less stays lit, but when it stutters (Causing system performance to drop to about 5%), it goes:

"GRP GRP GRP GRP GRP GRP GRP GRP GRP GRP GRP GRP GRP GRP"

...and the little light goes <blink, blink, blink, blink, blink, blink>.

Is this because of excessive disk fragmentation, a virus, bad sectors, or what? Always seems to happen on certain programs, ie: Windows Media Player.

Heeeeeeeelp meeeee.

Bad Sectors...

Probably Bad Sectors... which is why it only buggers up on certain programs because that part fo your hard disk is the damaged part.

You can check this by:

Using Scandisk on Win98 with Surface scan.
Using Chkdsk on Win2k/XP to check your hard disk.

other then that, i have no idea.

probably fragmentation, run scandisk/chkdsk and then run defrag.

I'll run scandisk (1 1/2 hours) then defrag in safe mode (have to, otherwise the bloody thing restarts over and over again. + 3 1/2 hours).

*sigh*

My HD on my last puter started making a similar noise, about a month before it died and went to HD heaven....

*cries*
