When I turned on my pc this morning, my Seagate Barracuda 200gb SATA drive started to make a constant clicking noise, and the drive wasn't detected either. Also the pc doesn't boot as a result of it. The drive is very new, bought it in january this year, and apparently seagate drives have a 5 year warrenty, so hopefully i will get it replaced. The thing i'm worried about about is my data, I have a lot of university coursework on there that I need off it. Anyone have any ideas on how I can get the data off it again? Any suggestions will be very welcome.

Thanks,

Nine days of mourning, then a funeral, and a conclave to decide on the new HD is a must :p

But odd that a Seagate died, they have a reputation of being good drives O.o.

If the comp can't even detect the HD, then I'm afraid you yourself can't do anything about it. You need to send it to a place that can get the data off of it, but that will void the waranty afaik.

Always make back ups to DVD or another HDD. It's so important.

I need to get a new HD soon. 40gb just isn't enough :/

Update: I have disconnected the drive, and I'm now using a windows partition on another disc I have. I found backups that I made recently, except some of my music (about 6gb ) and some of my applications are missing unfortunately. I also had a look into what Seagate can do with drives that have had data recovered from them by a 3rd party company. As long as teh company informs Seagate of the recovery, then it doesn't void the drives warrenty. Still a right pain, but the main thing is that I have my uni work recovered and most of my apps and music. Defintely going to invest in a dual layer DVD writer so i can keep regular backups in the future. Thanks for the suggestions so far and keep them coming!
