So I'm having a problem with my hard drive. I've asked my dad but he laughs at me and keeps saying "I'm glad your machine is crashing". So he never helps me when he's good with computers. But I have 2 hard drives; C: [applications] and D: [data]. Once in awhile a get a clicking sound in my tower, then my D hard drive just crashes or something, btu I'm not entirely sure it's crashing. I open up my tower and find that the cable connecting the hard drive to the tower is loose. I push it in and later on the same thing happens. So I'm wondering if it's the hard drive itself or my computer, anyone help please?

stop using it immediately

Buy a new cable

if that fixes it, then stop here

if not:

buy a new hard drive

Copy D: to the new drive

recycle D: drive

Will do then, once I get the freakin money, I hate being poor >=| lol
So it most likely is the drive?

****ing lol. Sorry but this is hilarious.

I could imagine an older brother being a bully and doing this to you , but your dad? Bwahaha.

My dad could be a jackass somethimes. I've told him about it, but he refuses to help me. Even I laughed when he told me this lol

I already backed it up before it went all screwy (Thank God)
The reason I realized it was the hard drive was because when I did a scheduled back up, there were many errors. And when I checked the error logs, all the errors were in my crappy hard drive

If you ever hear any Clicks, Clacks, Clucks, or any sound which starts with the letter "C" anywhere near the HDD, you've got to backup your vital stuff, disable HDD by removing (Disconnecting) power-cord and brace yourself that the thing dies rather later than sooner.
I don't think you need a new cable; HDD cables outlast the HDD itself, unless they're neglected, which never happens.
If you already backed-up your personal files (Porn clips) then there's no need to worry, just unplug that HDD so it doesn't crash system, and go shopping.

BTW, is your dad a Drill Sergeant? Like in the military families? ... Just wondering. :|

Poor guy; your dad is the dad I never wanted to have. And I don't mean it to be rude.

Good Luck.

So now I need to save up some money

And no, my dad isn't in the military lol
He's a computer technician

He didn't necesarily say it in a he doesn't care way
He had some joke in it, but for some reason he refuses to help

The last thing he wants to do is screw around with your computer all day to find out he has to spend money to fix it.

I know I hate working on other people's computers unless I'm being compensated. One little thing is always a lot of other things too. And it takes a lot of time, and it's frustrating because everything is set up a little different.

I wouldn't hold it against him. You resolved the issue on your own, I'm sure that he will be proud.

Now, just get a job and save up and get a hard drive.

Besides, it might set him back finding out you can get on without him

I have one more question though. The cable always comes loose, so the problem would be the cable, right? Like I said in my original post, the cable is always loose. And it just dawned on me, it has to be the cable and not the hard drive. Or am I totally wrong on this? lol

I actually agree with virus's point of view; on your dad's lack of help "Give a man a fish and you'll feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll eat forever" Now that you got it all figured out by yourself, you're that much more of a man.
So I like to recant my narrow minded view of your dad with an apology.

Even though I very much doubt the cable is what's causing the HDD to click, you'll never know till you rule that out by swapping cables and trying it with different cable, see if clicking goes away.
If either cable is loose, they would more likely cause system crash than clicks. I hope I'm wrong that, but, I like to encourage you to find that out by using different cables this time.

Good Luck.

Woohoo! I'm manly! lol
I think my dad has spare cables, so I'll search through his collection next time I'm down there.
And thank you for all that gave me help, much appreciated! =)

im having a hard time figuring out how your cable keeps coming loose. do you have like alot of tension on it or something?

me too

@DH

is the cable EIDE or SATA?

either way, a new cable is very inexpensive

.. and they have SATA cables that have a lock feature to keep them from coming out.

No, no tention whatsoever. It's just connected. I really don't knwo what kind of cable it is. I'm down at my mom's right now, so I won't be able to figure it out until tomorrow. But like I said, my dad has lots of spare computer parts, so maybe he'll have one

if it is extremely wide and flat, then it's EIDE. EIDE is about 3 inches wide, and sata is about 1/4 of an inch wide.

SATA cables do come off rather easy and without your knowledge.

dont see that happening unless you have alot of tension on the cable, but ill stick around and see what happens in this thread.:farmer:

SATA cables are notoriously insecure, though I never had a problem with the one that came with my DVDROM

they have SATA cables that have a lock release available at www.monoprice.com

That's what I use.

Giant, finish the damn quote, will ya.
What you're doing is what people call "Quoting out of context". And that ain't cool, unless you stopped reading my post halfway. :P

Well in a few hours I'll be at my dad's house
So I'll check the cable, fix it up (we have have an extra)
And tell you guys how it's doing
But I think me being on the computer all the time might have done it. I so call "Finger *** it" lol

Ok, so I changed the cable
So far, no clicking sounds
Hopefully it was the cable and not the hard drive
'Cause I really don't want to spend so much on one
And then i have to buy another one 'cause I'm running out of room lol
And I need to buy it if I want to get TF2 >=O lol

Damn, I got some money today and I was gonna go and buy Team Fortress 2 lol
Looks like I have to save up now

You know, if the healthy drive has more space than you know what to do with, you can buy a 80-100GB HD (LIKE THIS ONE) for dirt cheap. Install system files on that one, and install games and user files in your second drive (The one you currently have, the healthy one). You may end some money left for TF2.

Good Luck.

My healthy one barely has any room left, that's why I need to by a bigger one for that one
And seeing that hard drive you just showed me, I might get that one as a replacement. 'Cause I have a shitload of room left on my faulty one

Nevermind, I lied lol
My good one is only 37 GB (most used) and my bad one is 233 GB (only 55 used)
So I could just get two of the 80 GB one and it should be good.
