Here's a conversation I had with my brother. I'm not entirely sure about the accuracy of his statements . . .
[18:21] Me: Lets see how long it takes to transfer 142 GB from my PC to my laptop, lol
[18:21] Brother: dude
[18:21] Brother: thats a stupid move
[18:21] Me: why?
[18:21] Brother: youre going to pack your laptop hdd and then have defragmentation problems
[18:21] Brother: later
[18:22] Me: even fater it's removed?
[18:22] Brother: due to the files being placed on there, yes
[18:22] Brother: you might be able to avoid/prevent that from happening by installing a prog called diskeeper
[18:23] Brother: its a smart/automatic defrag utility

hell yea they are! You might keep a marginal performance increase if you walk on eggshells concerning fragmenting your hard drive but imo it's not worth the hassle. Unless you are one of those people who try to max out their stress test software you probably won't notice the difference.

The best one I've used is PerfectDisc

It's the only one that defrags the TOC (Table of Contents) metadata. Other defrags don't do it, and therefore the hard drive has to do extra seeks.

It's not free though.

Makes Windows (or whatever you use the drive for) fast. Like fresh install.
