So, my friends PC is having some sort of wierd hardware issue (nothing i've ever seen).

Apparently, before booting, his display goes all wonky, and the only way he can get to any sort of viewable screen is to go into safemode (he's memorized which key to press). Once in safemode, his PC works fine.

He says though, that if he tries to get into windows (IE, letting it boot normally instead of hitting safemode keys), then after the windows logo shows, his monitor loses the vidcard signal (ye know, when the green "on" light turns to orange?).

I was thinking maybe it was a mobo problem, because I allways thought that your vid card isn't actually used until windows starts up.

Anyway, thoughts? I've included a picture.

O_O

I'm thinking it's a driver issue. If it works fine in Safe Mode then it couldn't be a hardware problem since, obviously, everything works fine. At the most extreme, reinstall Windows.

Ok, so he just got into normal windows (after uninstalling all traces of his vidcard drivers in safemode). Everything seemed fine.

Then he installs the latest forceware drivers (nvidia 6600gt btw), and his computer freaks out, and now he's back to square one.

Methinks a vidcard issue...

Thoughts?

EDIT: After some experimenting, he's found that he can start up just fine, so long as he doesn't have the forceware drivers installed...
