I was poring myself a glass of pop...because it's hot here, I decide it would be nice to add an icecube. I take one out of the freezer, put it in the pop. Half of the icecube was out of the pop, and the other half was in the pop. Seconds later the icecube exploded and half of it flew across the kitchen! Beware the Icecubes!!

Yeah, its because of the rapid change in temperature.

The icecubes usually crack, but never explode.

never in my life have i heard something like this... quite funny though.

Most likely the cause of extreme temprature changes. The pop was about 3 degress celcius and the ice cube was about -40 degress celcius so, I would think that why..kinda neat.

Strange huh? First time in my life that happened to me..could be the water the icecube was made of maybe?

The thermal shock usually cracks my icecubes, but never makes them explode!

-40 celcius? Is your freezer called Antartica?

No..that's my temprature of the freezer. I can set it down to -45 if I wanted to. AND..here in Edmonton alberta it does get that cold in the winter time..so my freezer is not in antartica, it's in Edmonton :).

Are you storing dead bodies in it or something? :p

"whisper"..you were not supposed to tell anyone. :E Wait a minute..how'd you find out...never mind.

Freezers get that cold, so If theres a power outage, it stays really cold.

I remenber that hapened a lot to me whit metal glass full whit frozen water so it was a big piece of ice, sometimes they jump from the glass
and I remenber one day one was on the table and when it "exploded" making a loud song the glass jumped

i would guess that there was an air bubble trapped within the ice. the rapid temperature change caused it to rupture, and sent the ice cube out of the glass. it must be a case of the perfect conditions all coming together.

God knows I've had em split...and partially spray some ice at me..nothing BIG..just little pieces, enough to take out an eye or something..
*Puts away BBgun.*

My guess is that the ice cube was made of nitro glycerine and someone was actually trying to kill you.

Isn't it called "buckling" ?

It happens when there is a rapid temperature change.

Thats how they kill the Alien in Alien 3. Pour freezing cold water onto it, and then boiling hot oil, and it explodes. I'd like to do that to a child rapist someday.

I had a glass explode on me like that before. I was drinking ice water, finished it, and stupidly put it in a very hot sink of water to wash it. It shattered into pieces. :rolling:

I have done that before too, it didn't explode though, just cracked.

I had a thermometer explode on me, i put it in dry ice in science class, and I washed it with 50C water. more then a 100 degrees in temperature change. :x

lol noob

You know you're wasting money keeping your freezer that cold, right? Unless of course you're lying, which I think you are.

I have to keep it that cold, the power goes out all the time here, if it wasn't that cold, the food would defrost.

Edit: Its not just my house, its the transformer for the whole area, it gets flooded and they have to replace almost the whole thing.

Its not quite as cold as -40°C, mabye -30°C.

Happened to me once. Before a piece of chicken exploded while I was re-heating it in the microwave. And before I put 2 glasses into eachother and when I puled them apart 1 exploded.
Edit: Maybe if you didn't put so much power into your freezer the power wouldn't go out. -40! Get your own generator for that bloody thing!

Freezing cold water wouldn't be cold enough, because it would not even be zero C. because its not ice :P. Liquid nitrogen would do the trick- then boiling hot water.

Crap I double posted :(

Happaned with a glass once. That was painfull. (The glass didnt explode, it cracked while I was holding it, thus I cut myself)

Matters how powerful the compressor is and/or what refrigerant it's using. Most freezers can get that low.

never with an ice cube, but i've had an egg blow up on me before. My uncle had boiled an egg and went off into his garden and forgot about it. When I came down to the kitchen, the water in the pot had boiled away, and the egg was just sitting on a heated surface. I carefully took the egg out and put it on a plate to cool it down. About a minute later, the egg blew up and shot chunks of egg everywhere. My uncle's house us an old victorian type of house with really high cielings.... there were chunks of egg in places you couldn't reach without a ladder. Also, the plate that I set the egg on shattered and the explosion pushed some of the plate about 1 ft and fell off the edge of the counter.
