Steam Update Released

September 23, 2005, 12:06 pm · cliffe Updates to Steam have been released. The update will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. This release includes a number of very specific CPU and memory footprint optimizations brought over from the Half-Life 2: XBOX development codebase. The release also includes all of the engine groundwork to enable the Day of Defeat: Source launch that will happen Monday, September 26 at 3:00 PDT.

I know its premature to ask (considering my Games computer will be back online in lke 1-2 months), buts there nothing wrong in asking.

Is this supposed to speed up loading between levels, or is it something else

Anyway, it will be a total time of 6 months offline (yep, playing HL2 and CSS with Bots :( ), I can't wait for the updates, and the inevitable problems they will generate :)

yes and increase the smoothness in play - less spikes in fps
it seems to be good - mods like minerva which took forever to load before are now noticeably faster and i haven't had a crash in a long time either

You could of told me bad stuff about it, now I am more eager to get back online so I can get my update ;(

Percentage-wise, how much faster (loading times). Guestimate is enough for me

Does the load time also include the time it takes for the menu to loadup from the desktop?

i couldnt say - hl2 still loads slowly
maybe overall 3/4 the length of what it used to be
the real optimisation i felt was in game - its super smooth now whereas before there were jerks on even high end systems when entering resource intensive areas and fraps benchmarks support this
although the bad news is that alot of people got the stutter problem for the first time from one of the updates (it could have been that one or the hdr one)
on the other hand if you want to play online again well :p
