HD 3800 Series Info Thread

So... to wait on dx10.1 cards for my new build or no?

I guess it depends on the price range / benchmarks of the new 10.1 mid-range ATI card.

I'd like to see what Nvidia has to offer for the dx10.1 camp, hopefully a card using the same 45nm tech the 8800gt uses - small, quiet, and power efficient always wins for me.

I'm holding fire on buying a card now too. I have everything for my build in the room with me except a graphics card now. I'm bargaining on the 9 series card making an appearance in a couple of weeks, having a look at the price / power of it, and if it's too expensive/ not a huge improvement I'll go for the then reduced 8800 GTX without a doubt! I'm hoping the release of the 3800 will make nvidia get their skates on...

PCI Express 2.0?

We’ve received a short update and learned that RV670XT the card that might end up branded as Radeon HD 3870 will sell for $199 at launch.

Nvidia expected a $249 price for the new RV670XT, but ATI realized that G92/D8M is a better performer and that it has to drop the price to be competitive.

The big advantage that ATI has is that its chips are smaller and the manufacturing is cheaper, but that won’t help much if they fail to sell a lot of them. We suspect that toward Xmas this $199 price might go even further down to put even more pressure on Nvidia.

Fudzilla link in first post. They could very well be pulling information out of their arse though. If they out perform the 8800GT and have fixed the AA issues AMD could be on to something, especially with decent prices.

Fudzilla is just that, fud.

I wouldn't wait for DX10.1 cards. If you wait, do it to see how it performs in DX10 or games out now.

Waiting a fortnight to see how these cards perform against the 8800GT is going to kill me. I don't even care about DX10 as I don't use Vista. The HD3870 could match the 8800GT due to a greater potential with it's 320 stream processors, if AMD are smart and increase the speeds as well that would be a good start. The core will likely be an optimized version of the 2900XT which was a rush job and really quite poor. The fact that the 3870 will be DX10.1 compliant means it is not just a 2900XT core on a smaller processs.

In any case it's all mostly speculation and what not, nothing is confirmed and that's why I'm waiting until some benchmarks are out in the wild before I commit to a mid range purchase.

even if its slightly better most games just work better with Nvidia cars imho.

Not really there are many cases where one camp pulls ahead of the other in game x. Besides this is the bomb shell AMD needs right now and it'll have to stomp the 8800GT at a significantly lower price point for it to stand a chance.
