Righty. I'm running a KS78X motherboard with a SiS chip in it (shite I know, but still)

Hoki, well here it comes: I've been trying to install Mandrake 10.0 on Z: (my second hard drive, I feel thats irrelevant) I boot from CD and Madrake 10.0 happily starts up, but when it gets to something todo with hard drives (either of them, C or Z) it hangs, and after a while I get 'hdc interrupt' and another hang, and then a little later it'll do something else. Right, I know that if I install while this is going on, then I'll end up with data corruption on Mandrake, and that'll be a pain in the arse to fix. I've tried installing using 'ide=nodma' but that doesn't do anything. It's been suggested that I flash the BIOS, but is it possible to upgrade what seems to be faulty IDE drivers without any risk of turning my computer into a pretty hunk of metal?

ive been having the exact same issue but i have the latest BIOS available for my PC so i doubt that would help...

This might not help you but I found that Mandrake can be a bitch with any sort of hardware (odd or otherwise). Have you tried running it with the option -noapic

This helped me when I had problems with Mandrake and disc controllers.

Righty, I'll try that. I put it in the same place i put 'linux ide=nodma' correct?

yes. I can't remember if you need the - though

Do I need to put 'linux' in front of it, since that runs the installation?

yes, try:

linux noapic

if that doesn't work, try

linux nopic ide=nodma

it turns out the - is not needed. Disabling dma will hamper performance so I suggest you try the former first.

I had hoped that Mandrake would have at least solved the necessity to use noapic after 9.1...
