So HDR is super cool right? When you come out of a dark room, everything is super bright for a second or too. What about when you come from a bright area into a dark room. Does everything get super black for a second before your eyes adjust? Cause i didn't notice that. If not...they really need to add that.

It doesn't do that in DoD:S because people can camp in those dark spots. Lost Coast should have HDR that lowers the exposure settings that low.

Yes quite right, it works that way in real life. Especially winter in Canada here. Staring at the snow and then walking indoors makes everything dark. This is how it should be (but isn't):

Yes, when you go from light to dark, your eyes take a short amount of time to adjust in DoD:S. It's not as noticable as the change from dark to light, since you can always have brighter light, but black is as dark as it gets, and hence the HDR need to be able to look "whiter than white" but there's just no such thing as "darker than black".

While darkness isn't hugely used in DoD, Valve's implementation of HDR does allow for it. There could, for example, be a mod where your eyes acted like DoD until you got to a certain amount of darkness, at which point you eyes would adjust very slowly until you could see, giving you the advantage against people who just came into the darkness.

Yeah, your eyes have to adjust for a while if you've just been fighting in the sun and you rush in a dark house. But it's underused in fear of camping as Shens said. Underused, but it's there.

could you last two guys give me a specific area. i've never seen a room be almost totally black and then get lighter.

also "It's not as noticable as the change from dark to light, since you can always have brighter light, but black is as dark as it gets, and hence the HDR need to be able to look "whiter than white" but there's just no such thing as "darker than black"."
In the game, you can't always have brighter light. white is as light as it gets. just as you can make the illusion of whiter than white, you can make the illusion of blacker than black.

Well think of it like this:
Light goes into your eye. The less light, your "rods" will expand to let more light in thus letting you see better. If you enter a pitch black room, in which there is no light at all your rods adjusting will do nothing as no light is entering your eye.
(Light works by stricking an object, and then the object absorbs the colors, and what it dosn't absorn gets reflected which is it's color).

you can make the illusion of blacker than black.
So this is a no, you cannot get any color lower than black, because black is technically not a color, but what shows up when your eye recieves no color. Black is what shows up when nothing is coming into your eye. If something absorbs all the colors, it reflects none thus that shows up as black.

just as you can make the illusion of whiter than white,
Of course you can. Because white is light, while black is not light. You can get ligher than white. This is done by changing the frequency and wavelength of the light coming at your eye.

I have a very good memory of the light section in science :).

I'm not trying to start a flamewar dude, but you still are just trying to make a truth where there isn't one. The last thing you said doesn't even make sense. There is no such thing as lighter than light or blacker than black. Pure white light is white. Pure absence of all light is black. You're right; you can't really get "blacker than black," but you're wrong when you say that you can get lighter than white. You can only do the illusion of both.

Going from a dark to light area means your pupils will initially be large and taking in way more light than needed. Thats why some things seem super white bright with the set lighting even when they aren't. It's still not "lighter than white" or "whiter than white." On the same note, going from a light to dark room means that your pupils will initially be small. Not enough light is coming in so initially things look black that aren't really black with the set lighting.

You're only half right when you say that you can't get "blacker than black" because black is the absence of all light and you can't go beyond that limit. So yes this is true when you go into a pitch black room. No matter how much your eyes adjust, it will remain black. The same thing applies to going in a room with nothing but pure white light shining from all directions. No matter how large or small your pupils were, you wouldn't see anything but a blinding light. You can't get any lighter than that. Obviously neither of these situations apply to HDR in games. It's only going to deal with areas of some light.

Now back to the original point, where is an area in the game where your eyes have to adjust to a dark room? Thanks 8 )

I guess I should have rememberd the name of the map but its the last one in the choices to create a server. There is a room that is facing the outside and it has a chair in it. When you walk into the room it will be dark and then adjust and be a bit brighter. Its not drastic but it is noticable.

you can get lighter than white in the game by making the light bloom to show on top of other areas. You can't have a dark bloom I think is what they mean.
