This is probably going to sound like a dumb question to most of you out there who play this game on a daily basis, but I'm going to ask it anyway. :p Me, being a PC-Console Hybrid have a hard time readjusting to the Mouse&Keyboard/Controller every time I play.(basically what I'm saying is that MY AIM SUCKS!) Anyway I was wondering If I should just run and gun aiming for the general body area or stop and aim for the head. The problem is when I shoot for the body the other person(getting head shots on me) usually kills me first, but when stoping to aim for the head I usually get shot anyway(because you gotta keep moving). So what do you guys/girls think is the better strategy...head shot(stationary) or general body(moving)?

I aim more for the chest but headshots are the way to go, ak is basically aim for the chest and let the recoil take you to their head, colt is just pow pow pow, some people have perfected their aiming quite nice, just gotta keep your mouse at the right level

if u want to hit where u aim, u have to stand still/crouch
& if u want to get lucky hs then run like headless chicken and spray

On huge ranges, stand still. On medium range, it depends a bit on the situation. I usually flash + run or wait crouched untill an enemy comes around the corner. On close range standing still is suicide. You have to run and spray because you will hit him anyway. Just jump, run, etc, so you're a harder target.

I say that when there's a lot of distance between you and your enemy (Take Dust2 for example, when you are at A and the enemy is at B, you can see each other). Here it's better to crouch, but keep moving and only stop to fire and then start moving.

Take medium range now. Let's say Dust, where you rush the overpass and through the corridor to the right where the sniper nest is. This is medium range, and so the best tactic is to keep moving but stop momentarily to fire, and I mean briefly. This is better if the enemies are snipers and get a missed shot on you as that gives you time to stop and shoot them back.

Close range is down to different weapons, and I won't go into detail here, but let's take the main two machine guns for example; the M4 and AK47. With the m4 you can just crouch when you see the enemy and start spraying and you'll get a decent shot if you're lucky. but AK's you can't spray as easily (They have more recoil and so less shots hit where you aim when spraying), so try and keep it under control and bursts of 1-3.

Listen to Deathincarnate and dekstar.....they speak the truth. It all depends on the situation and the weapon in hand. Just play more and you will eventually develop your own style of shooting

Just listen to him. He speaks the truth :p

Thanks for the advice people, but you gotta remember that I really suck at aiming. While I'm moving I can't hit anything, I can only get good shots on a person while I am stationary... just keep that in mind... :)

Then try aiming at his chest. It's a larget target and you spray can make you hit his legs, arms or even his head.

Don't even start learning to aim center mass... You should always be going for headshots. You'll miss at first but those Habits are hard to get rid of once they're learned.

3 shot bursts.... Spraying is no better than praying. Side step back and forth if you have to but don't let that be an excuse for not aiming at his forehead.

horses for courses. But usually the- move- stop- shoot- move, routine works wonders (eventually you can throw aim into that sequence aswell :E ). Then again you might find yourself in a small room full of the enemy and at a time like this the previous tac wont be so useful! That doesn't mean random spray agogo either it means using a more considered spray while moving as fast as you damnwell can!

In the end tho we could all give you tons of advice about how to play cs, and some of it might even help but you've already had the best advice- play, play as much as you can and don't worry if you suck, at the end of the day we've all been new to this game at some point. You start bad and gradually learn, and soon it becomes instinct.
You see a lot of the skill in cs isnt about blistering reactions (tho they do help in a squeeze!), it's about preempting your opponents actions and knowing where to aim before he's there- this means learning the maps and instinctively knowing where that next head is going to pop out! When I play, the xhair is allways at head height adjusting for distance etc....and thats a good place to start with your aiming. Of course there's a lot more to controlling the xhair and getting kills than this but only time and experience can fill these other gaps.

Practice moving the xhair in a horizontal line- your goal is to be able to move the xhair accross the screen without it drifting from the row of pixels it rests on. Practice with different sensitivites aswell, everyone differs with this and regardless of advice, again you'll have to see whats best for you.

Which is the moral of the story- We're all different and we all play differently, we all react differently, we all think differently. As deep as it sounds YOU'RE DIFFERENT(!), now go and learn how different you are and develop you're own style...

(having said that check out this guide and this guide over at csnation.net. Oh and if you find yourself dead a lot remember to use the time wisely and spectate decent players:) )

Better still get out now while you can....before cs takes over your life!

I agree with the above... More important than pinpoint accuracy or lightning reflexes is being where they don't expect you.. This is tactics not technic.

That's not always the same routine on any map but a good example of what I mean is playing T in Office... A run through the garage and back into the office can put you behind a group of pinned downed CT's... Who cares about your aim...Take your time and pick 3 off before they know they've been flanked.

Of course if they're countering you this will get you slaughtered.... ;-)

Be where they don't expect you to be. But I still believe you should ALWAYS be aiming for the head... (Because the guy you are shooting at is aiming at yours)

Thanks for all the encouragement, but just because I'm not as good as others doesn't mean I will quit playing, so you don't have to worry about that. ;) Also I try being where people wouldn't expect me to be, (well atleast where I think they won't expect me to be) but It seems like the pros can smell me, seriously they walk right past the rest of the team just to hunt me down. :p Here's another question... Do you think it would be worth the money to buy a controller? I play a lot of Halo 2 (probably more than CSS) and everytime I switch from keyboard/mouse to controller it feels like I'm trying it for the first time. :(

All these people say 3 shots bursts or just bursts. To tell you the truth, my aim used to suck.

What I do and I was in your same situation a long time ago, I #1 never crouch. I noticed my first shot is always more accurate standing. I will explain why the first shot is so important in a sec. Also I keep my crosshairs centered at head level constantly. So that at any time I can stop or switch to walk mode and easily put someones skull in my sights. Also if someone rushes you out of no where all you have to do is just react by clicking, they will usually aim for your body (because most people do that, especially when rushing) and when you click I promise you about 60% of the time AT LEAST you will get the kill + a headshot. I get about half my kills from this, people just turning corners and I just shoot and get a headshot cause I already have my crosshair situated at head level. And it will work running or not.

Next, I only use 1, I repeat, 1 shot bursts. 2 MAXIMUM. And every time I get the kill because I am guaranteed to get a hit every time I shoot unless I dont follow correctly which happens. If you spray or 3 shot burst you are guaranteed to get at least 1 or sometimes 2 hits, well why waste those 1 or 2 bullets and that time? Just click wait, click wait, click wait. 1 to 2 shots thats all. Yes you will fail with this sometimes but trust me it works.
Also for m4 I highly recommend not using the supressor.

If you follow both these instructions and read this carefully, I will guarantee you your aim and your game will get better after 3-6 days of doing this (some peoples learning curves are different). Also these suggestions work for every smg and rifle and pistol. Only mac 10 and tmp can be excluded from this. And mac10 is my best gun, yet I cant explain why I do so well.

Good luck, please read this all it will be worth it in the end.

Also I use the small crosshair, I never mess with console settings.

aim for the foot with a tmp while running.

When you first learn to aim at something big, it will be easier to aim at the head once you get a good aim. If your aim REALLY sux, why even TRY aiming at the head then?

No, you're all wrong. Just do what I do:

When you see someone, just get really excited and start gunning madly, aiming for the mid-body section.

After all, you have, what, 30 bullets in a clip? Sometimes more? ONE of them is going to make the kill.

Just run around and as soon as you see someone, know that if you don't unload as many bullets as you can in that same instant, you'll be dead the next. Now aren't you glad you weren't patient with burst-fire?

I'm a great CS coach. If you need me, come find me online... I'm usually hanging out somewhere near the bottom of the scoreboard...

But seriously, I can't seem to get over this mentality of gunning madly without stopping whenever something moves, or I'll be killed. Every time I try to calm down and use burst-fire I get killed instantly for wasting time.

I can smoke people to the ground in HL2 Deathmatch, and was ranked in the top 3,000 players, but in CS I just can't get the hang of anything.

I feel confident - I understand the weapons and most of the tactics... ...I feel very confident... until I come across the first enemy. Bang! Head-shot. 5 minutes of waiting around and being bored.

I've now resorted to the hobby of drawing in my sketch pad while dead. Yes... I don't play CS anymore, except when my brother plays. :dozey:

For all the millions of CS haters out there, I understand you. I WANT to like CS, but how can I enjoy a game that only caters to the super-good, and only allows the super-good to even play?

It's like if you aren't super-good, you can't play. You can watch. :monkee:

If you need me I'll be running and gunning, then spectating for a while, while I wait for my next chance to die while trying to play a game. :) CS is ironic. When someone says, "What are you doing?" I say, "Watching people play Counter-Strike."

I'm still desperately trying to get the hang of burst fire... maybe if I can master that, I can participate in the game.

At range, I like to use single shots at the upper body/head instead of bursts, especially with the ak... gotta love those big caliber rounds. Medium range, I burst just below the head, letting the recoil finish it, at short range, spray and pray. And always make sure that if you're not shooting, you're strafing. A lot of snipers can only hit stationary targets, so don't give them one. The main thing is, don't panic. At least half of the times i die it's because I jump the gun and don't aim well, or I'll be shooting at one guy, but then another guy appears, so I panic and start shooting at him. Basically, if you see an enemy, aim, and shoot with controlled bursts or shots. Sure, you'll start out a little slow and die a lot, but soon your aiming will just be reflex. Just takes practice.
