Head tracking using the Wiimote

I saw this on kotaku. It's great. I'm thinking of doing it here.

When he started using the second wiimote I literally stared at the screen with my mouth open. Wow.

That is ****ing awesome!

I want a Starfox version.

If nintendo released the head-mounted IR glasses, i'd buy them yesterday. This looks awesome.

i understand the the tracking. . .i dont understand how the 3d works. . .

The image changing to where the head is, is just the software he wrote responding to the input of the Wiimote. The Wiimote just provides the information where the head is, you still need the software to translate what that information means for the game.

That was awesome. Couldnt believe how much difference it made to the targets! :O

ha well i get that but i dont understand how that makes it pop out the screen like that. . .doesnt that require two seperate images?

Its because you can see whats behind the targets, and they're getting bigger/smaller when he gets closer/further away from the screen.

Nothing that's truly innovative about this, PC users have had headtracking devices for years, covering all axises etc.

Still, nice touch, doubt we'll see any Wii devs using his DIRECT method though, they'll probably find some way to make a periheripelal(I'm tired and I cant spell!) that you have to buy for it to work with games.

His program is cool though, might d/l it and try it out with my TrackIR.

But they often tend to be a tad expensive. Considering many people have access to a Wii, IR glasses can easily be made and blue tooth dongles are $5-10 a pop you can create a much cheaper solution. It may not be the best solution but just look at some of his other projects, such as the interactive whiteboard.

It's a fancy optical illusion... when the perspective changes as your brain expects it to, the illusion of true 3D space is born. I hope we see it implemented in games in the near future :)

someone should email Lucas Art this video to implement this kind of stuff in there next Star wars games for Wii....

Bloody cool, but the whole moving away/towards the screen.. I don't see how that could work in terms of game design.

I'm also tired.
