Headless Francis: what could it mean?

I mentioned this on another thread, but I thought I'd bring it up again simply because it could be a new (albeit obscure) easter egg.

As many players have no doubt noticed, there is a tall, promintent statue of what appears to be a monk in Ravenholm's graveyard:

Naturally, in keeping with the level's motif of disembodiment and general air of ghastliness, the statue has no head. What struck as significant was the bird being held in the statue's hands. In hagiographic imagery, a depicition of a saint holding a bird all but confirms it is a representation of St. Francis of Assisi.

My question is: why would the game's designers place an image of a specific saint in their game if there weren't some significance to it?

What little research I did on the subject didn't turn up any obvious links between St. Francis and Ravenholm--though, interestingly, he was said to have suffered stigmata (miraculously appearing wounds resembling the ones sustained by Christ during the crucifixion). Compare with Father Grigori who sports a cross-shaped scar on his right hand. It's a stretch I know... St. Francis is also often depicted holding a skull, which would have been more germane to Ravenholm's setting.

I looked all around for the head--unsucessfully. Its absense was a bit surprising, considering that (ahem) a certain type of gamer would probably get quite a kick out of pwning zombies with the head of the founder of the Franciscan Order.

No clue. Could be anything, even a blooper. It is an Eastern Orthodox Church, not a Roman Catholic one we see in Ravenholm.

Nokori, I am absolutely amazed at the stuff you are able to find in hl2. awesome work there, but my question is, would it not be rude if they put a headless figure of the priest there.

Valve would never do that, meaning they were not making a specific reference to that saint.

Valve probably copied the statue from some of the location pics they took to make the levels. The headlessness is interesting though.

Well, they did seemingly put a texture based on the Hiroshima A-Bomb Dome in backgrounds of Ep. 1. That could be construed as questionable taste. I dunno...

If you're at all familiar with Catholic iconography, it's pretty blatant. Depiciting a monk with a bird denotes St. Francis to about the same extent that a guy standing behind St. Andrew's Cross denotes St. Andrew.

Good point, Narvi. I'm not the only one who looked for the head, right?

You're probably the only one who noticed it.

May I add your ammunition conservation sucks?

My ammo conservation is just fine, thank you. What did suck was when poor old Father Grigori got zombie-stomped because I was busy snapping pics of the statue and poking around in search of the missing head.

I know the whole meaning.

Its a static prop model used for creepy map atmosphere in a videogame.

Very impressive Nokkori. I only wish i could be as observant as you in games. I mean, so many hidden goodies that enrich the universe we are playing in.

If you discover any other interesting things, like the head or anything else, keep us posted.

Heh heh. I'm so good at finding things, I often find them when they're not really there. Well, I'm starting to consider that possibility, anyway...

I'll say this much, whether his appearance is an accident/meaningless coincidence or not, that is St. Francis of Assisi, and he's totally going on version 2 of the "Things to See and Do" list--look for it on October 9th.
