I don't really keep up to date on here, so excuse me if this point has already been raised.

I dunno how to put this without sounding all morbid and commie, so i'm just gonna type it in.

Do u think that Valve have done that thing called publicity stunt, so as to increase profits at the games eventual release.

Evidence:

An Impressive looking 600mb avi is released showin off some lovely stuff and everyone goes "wooo, That's ace". And it is but the demo has many flaws, and obviously only shows u a few bits of the game, which is fair enough, i mean it was nowhere near finished :)

Then, crash, bang, wallop, "half life's been nicked" blah de blah, source on the net blue de blah. Peeps download it in the thousands. Hmm maps. Hmmm Editors. HMmmmm textures. The usual shit. The kind of shit people can very easily steal stuff from. Or learn from.

So when Hl2 is released, u have a shitload of coders waiting in their droles to convert their "beta" work into the real deal, thru mods and maps and configs and anythin else u can think of.

Now, correct me if i'm wrong but aren't Valve earnin' fat piles of cash from their Mod Franchises? Do they earn revenue from running the Steam Network and WON and stuff?

What a very convienient slip up if they do.

Valve will Pwn u all eventually.

Of course, everything i've said there could be absolute bollox, it's just a random twist in the tale that i thought of when in-ebriated (typo?). And if it is then fair enough, i just wanna play the smeggin' game.

Hi. Love your title. Like your siggy. Disagree with your theory. I think they stood to lose too much from a leak to do it on purpose...

Please don't even put that idea into peoples heads, to be blunt it is a pathetically stupid theory that has come up a thousand times before and really has to stop being taken seriously.

This can't be the case. A lot of avid fans have become angry about the fact that Valve have delayed the game. A lot more are even angrier that Valve haven't said anything to us for the last 2 months.

Also, no company on this earth would release the source code to an unreleased product. Very, very dangerous if you ask me. That source code leak could still have a bad effect on Valve in the long run if they haven't taken the right precautions.

If it was a publicity stunt, it has certainly been a bad one.

Yeah, you could've done it alot better if you ask me.

Anyone could have pulled a better publicity stunt than leak your own source code and deliberately delay your software for 8 months... I think....

Yeah, Chris_D, but MaxiKana seemed to be talking to someone in this thread, and I couldn't figure out who...

No i was talking about the original post, sorry if it came out unclear :/

although everybody IS talking about hl2 now arent they, it is publicity.

someone said somethin about a publicity stunt that causes an 8 month delay is never a good thing. No. But thats the whole point isn't it.

Plus, your average half life joe doesn't have the hardware to run this game yet and u know it, and they know it. People are still usin geforce 2 mx's FFS. And if you're a lazy game bum like me, then u won't have the money for one of those spangly radeons. A 9700
would be nice, acceptable, but then u always strive to make those precious games look that extra bit better, and a lot of peeps won't do that yet.

Are u followin'?

reasons why this theory is stupid:

1) No developer in there right mind would release there source code for a comercial product before it's release.
2) Valve are under contract not to give away products like microsoft voice recognition SDK or Havok SDK,
3) The leak of the source code is a security risk for anygame that will use the source engine in the futer.
4) Alot of game companys these days are not releaseing demos that are of a polished nature never mind a shitty alpha type things
5) Several international law enforcement agencies are involved in tracking down the hacker, if the hacker was found out not to be real and this all to be a publicity stunt then Valve would never see the light of day again and Gabe would go to prison
6) This has negativly impacted Valves reputation and alot of people have lost interest in the game a good PR department would be able to foresee this outcome
7) The argument that valve have delayed the game because the average users hardware is not good enough is bullshit, UT2003 doesn't run too well on a GeForce 2 either or GF4 mx for that matter.
8) it's just a stupid theory that makes no practicle sense.

Dear god... like Valve was ever gonna need that. HL still sells in stores.

I dont believe that valve let the beta release happen, but the they definatley made the events work for them, by keeping a button on it. so basically they just know how to handle cock ups, :).. which is a good thing because if they didnt, they would of gone into panic instead of remaining calm.. which i guess in turn could effect the release date

OK Mr Chimp, point taken.

However i ain't no fool, i just wanted to offer a different, modern day spin on the issue. To see what kind of reaction it got.

As it happens, i've been fairly mis-understood again, but who isn't when they post on these things.

But i say if they wanted to find the hacker, they would have found him by now. I mean how hard can it be, honestly? Now don't give me any bullshit about cloaking and sellotaping phones together cos that's bollox. Somebody knows, somewhere. Probably someone directly connected to the telecoms business. Oh yes.

There are some they never have found. If you do it right then you won't get caught. If you read a manual and now you think your a hacker, then yes, your a$$ is grass. My thoughts is this guy is a god of a hacker. Just hate him for picking on a gaming company. Espically valve.

I'm sorry for being very hostile but there are too many people who genuinly believe this, if you were the first person to suggest it then i would have taken it differently, but you are most definately not. As for finding the hacker, it is highly possible that they just havn't managed to do it yet or we havn't been told of his capture or he is liveing in China and is untouchable. Just because there is one piece of very week evidence pointing towards a conspiracy it doesn't mean all the points against it are negated.

I really wish you wouldn't argue this case, I think I know what your trying to do but people are going to take you seriously and come here to protest about valve. your OK but the valve haters really get on my tits, I'v spent alot of time arguing against this lol.

There is an easy trick to get past the 10 character limit... but i won't post it because of obvious reasons.

So should this be filed under Speculation\Long shots or Speculation\Wild

Also just to finish, i may as well say, yeh i don't have anything against valve. They've given the world Half Life, an absolutely magnificent contribution in a number of ways.

Any one of the developers are very welcome to come round my house for tea.
