Help a Noob!

I got the orange box for christmas and have enjoyed all the new games. (portal is amazing) And I'm now on my way through episode 2 and I'm stuck. I'm at the part where freeman and the vortigaunt are trying to get the "extract". I'm stuck in a small room where I need to get a fence open and if this doesn't sound familiar it's the part where the vortigaunt says "Ah, Dr. Freeman, an interesting predicament", or something along those lines.

Put 2 barrels and an iron beam on the elevator across from the fence, then step on it. (Once you step on it, it weighs down, and will fall. Beware though, once you get off it will rise back up to the top.)

Aw I was stuck on that one for like half an hour.

I stepped on it, looking for a button, and i saw the elevator drop a bit, and I thought "Ohh, Valve, weight puzzle, eh?" and did exactly what I told him, and I was falling in no time.
