My pc specs are:
AMD Athelon XP 1600+ (1.4 gighertz)
768 Ram
Geforce 4 ti 4400

I can't get passed the intro.. the gman says "your hour has come. agai.. " and screen goes black and the game resets.

Have you updated your video drivers?
I used to use omega drivers and they caused a similar problem to doom 3 so if you have those go "official" (its a shame omega drivers r0x0rz meh b0x0rz)

you should actually update all of your drivers if you havent done so already

Maybe you updated to DirectX 9 and your video card doesnt support DX9 or at least I dont think it does.

Same EXACT problem

Athlon 2600
FX5900U
1 gig ram
xp

After the fiasco with getting this thing installed and authenticated, and now this, I'm beginning to think i have a set of 60-dollar coasters sitting on my desk.

I'll let you know if updating drivers works (i am not confident).

Update: didn't work.

Valve is now on my shit list.

Actually, you know what? **** the list. I'm taking this piece of shit back to EB in the morning.

Same problem at exact same point

Same problem at the exact same point - "Your hour has come..." then restart ... Balls.

nVidia drivers all up to date.

Over 1Gig of RAM.

No background apps running.

Vid and sound settings all at medium or low.

I'm not happy.

Have surfed the forums and Steam website - no solutions. This "seems" to be a memory problem, but it doesn't make sense because I've got all the memory you could shake a stick at, and some.

same here with the restart. But I have a little more Info about it. When I play CS Source it actually works ok till I start to look at a patch of water. Then boom reboot. This seems to be a graphic problem pertaining the shader effects. Turning Shader or Water reflection level to low is no solution. I'm now trying to install some older nvidia drivers maybe it will work then. I'll keep you updated.

Immediately before the restart I get a brief "blue screen of death" with a message on, but it flicks by in less than a second so I can't read it.

Apart from that, nothing to add, sorry...

EXACT SAME PROBLEM, no reboot but hard lock

Same problem here - no reboot but it just loops at 'come come come come come come come come come' ... quite annoying...

specs -

mb: Intel D865PERL motherboard
cpu: intel socket 478 prescott 3.4ghz @ 800fsb
audio: onboard ac97 optical out -> DTS receiver
video: Evga 6800 gt 256mb
ram: 1gb corsair ddr333 (2 x 512)
disk: adaptec 2940u2w / barracuda 80gb

HELP!!

I was thinking to try and clock or upgrade my processor, since I'm on the lower end of system requirements in that respect.

However, people here with much quicker CPUs are having the same problem, so I can't put it down to that (although I hear the Source engine is more dependent on CPU rather than memory?).

Same problem for me

Can't get past the Valve intro movie...

P4 2.55
1GB RAM
GeForce 4 Ti
Latest drivers for everything and direct x 9.c

Very annoyed that I went out and spent money on this and it was a pain to install, and now impossible to play...

Same ****ing shit here. I can't get past the Valve movie. Good thing I'm not getting my $50 back.

Similar problems on my end. Nvidia GeForce 4200 Go on a Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop.

Turns out Steam tells you to update nvidia drivers right off the bat before u launch the game. don't do it. It will **** the game up... stick with the old drivers... 61.76

Specifically nv4_disp.dll is where the issue lies in the new drivers.

I had this problem before the current one - after the Valve movie I got the blurred street scene with the black "loading" box in bottom right corner. After that, nothing. Ctrl, alt, dlt reveals HL2 "Not responding", though you'll need to wait about 2 minutes to be sure it's not still loading. It seems this was caused by the HL2 game files not having downloaded 100%, because after they had, I managed to get to the game to start - all the way up to the G Man freeze/reboot.

Seems Valve staff went on holiday a bit too soon!

Well, I was having this exact same problem. I have a vanilla GeForce 3.

I managed to pass this today with -dxlevel 70 as a launch option. That's right, forsaking shaders entirely. It's less pretty but runs faster. But it's less pretty. : /

I tried to pass this, save and relaunch as "-dxlevel 80", but the game still crashes within 30 seconds. I trust nvidia and valve have to work on this.

Wow Kitfox you were right, drivers 61.76 totally fixed the problem. I can play now ! o_O;

Dammit nvidia, this was rotten.

seems to be a Nvidia Problem only. Installed my old Ati 8500 everything runs great. But great to know that theres a fix for that.

nope. not just an nvidia problem. I have a radeon 9000, and the same loading screen crash in all but dx7 mode.

i was referencing to the crash in the intro when gman says your hour has come ag ag ag ag reboot

well my fix works... if i could edit my first port i would. Nvidia ****ed up with the nv4_disp.dll in the new driver update It crashes trhe system.. i at first i thought it was cpu overheating or gpu of heating.. but then i turned off windows xp's *automatic reset on crash* and i got the blue screen of death with an error pointing to nv4_disp.dll. Thats why it's better to roll back to the old drivers.

Nice one Kitfox!

Man that's great, worked for me too! Thanks a bunch.

Now to play...

Did any of your problems involve your machine powering down completely? I get about 10 seconds in before this happens to me. I fear I may need a PSU for my power hungry 6800, but I will try new drivers before I do that.

Anyone else try adding the command line "-developer" to the shortcut to HL2? I was having problems, went and did that, was able to skip the intro where I was crashing and adjust my video setting downwards, causing me not to crash. I'm just happy to be playing the game.

My issue was my cpu overheating. I've had it overclocked before, but nothing took it down like HL2. I tried everything else, updated and cleaned up every possible other thing, and it still hardlocked on me.

So I turned up my cpu fan and it worked fine.

Kitfox - nice job.

I had the same problem, and couldn't get support from either Steam (Valve) or Vivendi. Looks like the user group pulled through again.

Odd that all the older Nvidia parts have the same issue... I guess Nvidia rushed this driver version out, eh?

61.76 XP driver here:
