I hope someone can help. Before I formatted my hd, half life 2 ran great on my laptop. Now, the vid and audio are so choppy, it is impossible to play. Just horrible performance. I have a 1.6ghz celeron with 768 ram and an ati radeon xpress 200m. windows xp home. I downloaded directx 9c. Thanks.

Did you remember to download the recent drivers?

Which windows OS are you using, if its Vista, then you will need to download the Microsoft Hotfix to sort out your problem

Please list out all the steps you took after you reinstalled WinXP. Steps like updating all your drivers, video card, audio, chipset & all others.

I used the system restore disk which formatted the pc and returned it to factory default (and outdated drivers). Then I went to Toshiba's website and downloaded the updated drivers for everything. The ATI Radeon Xpress 200m series driver version that Steam says I am using is 6.14.10.6561. Steam also says "video driver outdated", but the steam driver update site can't determine my hardware. When I go to ATI's page, I can't find the 200m specifically, but "ATI Radeon series" is the closest match. And that driver is Catalyst 6.11 (seems older going by the version number). But then device manager says driver version 8.162.0.0 from 8/3/2005.

So maybe the simple question to start with is, what is the correct driver to use for the ATI radeon xpress 200m, and where could I get it. tried googling and forum search and it wasn't much help. Everyone is just using terms like "new catalyst driver" and such which isnt a big help. Thanks in advance, especially if this fixes my problem!

On the Drivers & Software page, choose your operating system (probably Windows XP), then for your hardware type, choose the "Integrated/Motherboard" category. The Radeon Xpress 200M is listed there. I had a bit of trouble finding it myself the first time.

Alright that got me in the right direction, but it's still not working right. The steps you show referred me to the "Catalyst" driver. I did some googling and it looked like alot of people were having better luck with the "omega" driver instead. I removed the old driver and control panel and installed the omega drivers. HL2 is a little better than before, but I'm still only getting 5 to 10 fps on average and choppy sound, even with all the audio/video settings in the game turned down to their lowest. It's now just barely playable. Any more advice?
