help, im losing my mind!!!!!

Ive tried everything to get hl2 to work on my comp (p4 2.8ghz with intel extreme graphics 64mb and 256mb RAM)including all suggestions on steam site, but it still wont start and says 'memory can not b read'. ive just noticed that in my control pannel, in system, it says that i only have 248mb ram not 256mb as i thought. Would this be the cause of problem as min required is 256, if so wheres my other 8mb gone?Thanks ;(

i get the same exact error. it says can not read memory at bla bla bla. my comp specs are

intel pentuim 4 2.5 gigs
760 megs of ram
intel extreme graphics card


i have read that other people have had this same error with nice graphics cards so i know its not the card. the directX 9.0 so thats not the problem. i have also reald that some people have chaned the slot the memory sticks are in and it worked. so if you want to try that it might work. and if any one can help us that would be great

Steam sucks, that's all you need to know. They suck at programming, and coding.

i agree. and i just took my 256 stick out. i still had the 512 in and i still got the error. one kid did that on his comp and it worked for him so i tried it and i did not work. here is a page that addresses this problem click here i would try to read all that and do the memtest. i dont know how to do that but i see on other forums they ralk about it.

its prob. crashing because the intel extreme gfx card is using 64mb of the shared mem. and not many ppl have gotten the game to start or just even get to the main menu with that intigrated card

Your 256mb memory shares probably 64mb with your graphic card. I suggest upgrading your memory to 1 gig.

i wouldn suggest that much jsut get anothor 256mb stick or if u want to spend some money get the gig

i have an intel extreme graphics card too and i had the same problem until last night when i stumbled on a post saying to go to the game properties, then launch options and put in "-fullscreen +mat_forcehardwaresync 0 +snd_async_prefetch_priority 1"

worked for me after trying pretty much every other solution

where is this launch option bit, i cant find it in the properties bit of hl2 icon???AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

in the steam "play games" thing, right click on half life 2 then go to properties, you'll see it there

also for the shortcut icon you're talking about (i think) i typed it in in the "target" field, but i don't know if that really did anything

well i put this where you said to and it worked YESSSSSS. but now i only get 20fps so im going to buy a ati 9250 PCI card since i dont have a APG slot

well i went to best buy and the guy there said that no PCI graphics card will support HL2. so i guess im stuck playing 1.6

now i got the card but i guess i have to go into setup when i start my comp to change grapgics to read from PCI slot and i dont know how to do that . ill have to mess with it b/c i cant get my comp to read that the ATI 9250 to even there.

did u use the new hardware wizard? that should help and also install the drivers for it.

Upgrade your RAM, 256 is too little anyway, even if you don't plan to play any games. Your compu gets vvveerryyy sllooowww... I had the same problem with my other laptop (Has Intel Etreme GPU). Crashed before it gets to the menu. Works great after I upgraded the RAM.
