Im thinking of buying a new computer some time around X-mas bacasue my 1700XP feels a little bit slow now.. i was thinking if anyone one here is good with how to overclock CPUs? if i would by a 3k+ or a 2500+, would anyone here be able to help me say how i would do to overclock it... and i will make sure that i order some extra fans to cool down the computer..

Thanks...

Around christmas I would advise a 3ghz (or 3000+). However, I doubt they overclock very good. If you want a good overclocker, get the 2.4c, can apparently easily go 3ghz... The 2500+ is not so good.

And the 1700 is not really slow... I had a 700mhz a while ago. When 2ghzers where common :)

by christmas the AMD64 mainsteam should be apearing....you might want to look into those.

2500+ overclock well and they're cheap in price. Ive seen people overclock to 2.5 GHz with a 2500 with only 1.7 Volts. For heatsink get a SLK800 with a Vantec tornado fan for the cpu(veryloud) or something quieter. Just make sure your motherboard can unlock the cpu multiplier, if it does then you're set.. Its simple to overclock , you take your multiplier for example 13 or whatever you want and you multiply it with your FSB , so if your FSB is 166 (PC2700) 13x166 = 2158MHz. slowly up your voltage from 1.65 and up till its perfect. just dont go any higher then 1.85Volts

I've only seen bad things mentioned about the 2500+. But then again, "bad" is defined as "it wont overclock 1ghz?! SUXXORZ!!!" :)

hah yes exactly. sometimes its not enough for them or they get a bad stepping cpu that doesnt go high enough without upping the voltage too much.

look into a P4 2.4c, of if you just want to get new CPU and your motherboard supports it, the 2500+.
you will want to get a new fan for it, id recommend a vantec aeroflow.

a64 would make you need new expensive cpu, motherboard, ram, windows 64bit(for 64bit preformance), and it would all cost a fortune because its brand new technololgy.

if your buying a whole new rig, you can just get a 2.4c or 2500+ and bring them up to 3000, saving a few hundred for other things. Make sure you get some nice 3200 ram for the 2500route and some pc3700 or higher for the P4, they love the higher ram.

What if my mobo cant unlock the CPU multiplier? i have experienced that my computer has been clocked down.. so i went in to the Setup in the beginning and increased the volt or something so it went back to its original speed (1700XP)
