i have an 8800gt quad core 4gb ram however i dont think any of that is relevant to orange box not being recognised my drive is an optiarc dvd rw all system and device drivers up to date

Can we get a screenshot of the error message?

If your DVD drive can read other disc's fine it's probably a faulty disc. If that is the case you can:
* Take it back to the store and get a replacement disc
* Download and install Steam, make an Steam Account (assuming you don't already have one) and then activate your Orange Box key. This will mean downloading the whole Orange Box though.
* Try the disc on another drive, if it works there copy the files to your hard drive and install from there.

It might not be a serious problem. Autorun might just not be running.

If that is the case:

1 - Open your "My Computer" folder (it's usually in your desktop)

2 - Right click on "DVD RW Drive (D: ) Orange Box", then click on "Explore"

3 - Open the file called "Setup"

Then install the game normally.

taviow, the most helpful and well illustrated post on halflife2.net ever, for something fairly straightforward!? *hats off*

Also, to clarify, I believe if you buy a retail version of Half-life 2, or the Orange Box, Steam requires you to put the disc in to install, with the CD key and won't let Steam download it. I've heard many examples of that. Try operational's troubleshooting method to single out if the problem is the drive or DVD.

If taviow solution won't help you because Windows cannot see your drive, you should reinstall drivers for your DVD drive. Be sure that there is no disc in drive when you are updating!

thanks for all your advice, i will try the disc in another pc to see if its the disc or drive. ps windows recognises the drive and has no trouble installing anything else just dosnt see the game in there at all ive tryed the explore method and it finds nothing. brb trying another comp should have done this sooner but it was 6am and i was wasted

If your two PC's are on the same network, then just install the game on the steam account you intend to use on the other PC, then share your 'steamapps' folder with your gaming PC.
After your game is installed on your non-gaming PC, log out of steam, then transfer all the .GCF files across to your gaming PC, making sure the steamapps location is in the same relative place (e.g. Valve\Steam\Steamapps).
After you log in to your steam account, the games should now be installed, and you can play them on your gaming PC.
