help is needed

OK, just bought HL2 after trying it at a local game store.. damn i'm hooked

now, for the problem:

I finished the installment and is ready to play the game.
Starting it from my startmenu, and the valve logo and the face appears on my screen. Goes to "loading" screen when this message pops:

Failed to set video mode - resetting to defaults. Game will now restart with new video settings

I click OK

new window pops up

failed to set video mode - falling back to safe mode settings. Game will now restart with new video settings

again I select OK

but..

failed to set video mode. this game has a minimum requirement of DirectX 7.0 compitable hardware

only option is CLOSE


My DirectX is 9c or what its called.

other info:

-NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 with AGP8X

system:
Windows XP Pro

Computer:
AMD Athlon XP 2500+
1,83 Ghz
1,00 GB of RAM


..can some1 help?

if u have dl the latest drivers from nvidia then its a driver problem because i had the same problem with my 5700le

uninstall your video drivers, then reinstall, that doesnt work, try installing the service pack 2 again.....

I Had the same exact Problem- HEAR ME OUT

NO. Dont Unistall WinXP. I had the same exact problem.

first- go to this link-
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html

second- choose an older version of the driver. "71.89" instead of what you have "77.72"

third- download the "71.89" driver
note- it will say "this driver is older than the one you already have- do you want to install it?"

click ok or yes

then follow the instructions, restart your CPU, then everything should work fine.

(note: for some reason the new drivers dont work with HL2. They talk about it on the steam support website. But if you get an older driver you will be fine)
