Very interesting artical i found on kotaku.

http://www.kotaku.com.au/2009/07/valve-predicts-fan-funded-game-development-future/#more-345798

Speaking to Australian ABC TV’s Good Game, Valve boss Gabe Newell says Valve wants to let the Steam community fund future game development.

I for one would pay money for the development if there was a chance of making money back on my invest also a copy of the game. What do you think?

Also heres a good inside valve video http://www.abc.net.au/tv/goodgame/video/default.htm?pres=20090720_2030&story=5

Pay money for a game that I paid for only to never see a release? I think not.

Yeah, cos normal investments in companys are risk free...

Its an interesting idea, I can see it working for inde developers who are willing to put the work in. Won't be for things like HL3 though.

I pay for the game once. That's it.

/me returns to WoW

...what?

Yay the news i found is on the front page :P:P

I'm already paying for the development by buying the game.

No not really. Your giving them back the money the publisher put up to develop the game, but your not putting that money upfront to start the development

I usually get paid when my work is done, and only if it's done right. There's no way I can persuade a customer to "fund" me in advance.

I assume you don't do work which usually requires investment in you prior to being able to do it.
This is basically letting the consumer be the publisher - investing beforehand and getting a piece of the action once it's finished.

Look at Gabe's face. Look at it.

It's like he knows what he's proposing is absurd and he's laughing on the inside at the prospect of consumers actually going along with it.

Yes, I do. Computers, equipment and software, I don't ask my customers to pay the working tools for me. But Gabe's proposal may be quite different. If I invest, I want some money back ;)

terrible idea. I'm not throwing money at a game that MAY be developed. it's not like you have any say in development anyways

You know, if I ever got interested in this kind of thing, the game will not matter anymore. It would be business, and business means money. I would be a publisher, not a gamer.

No, I won't pay for a game that could be shelved and if I were to pay for development I would definitely want a copy of the game for nothing after it has been made.

An equally brilliant idea, make games with advertisements, then pay us to play them! I just unlocked the Nike commercial!

I'm already paying for Cortex Command and NS2, but they offer beta versions etc before release.

I wouldn't pay for a game that didn't offer anything major.

This. I already help pay for development. I buy the game on release thereby ensuring I get a copy ad Valve get money.

Any other company proposing this idea would get a no from me.
Valve on the other hand, because I own every game they've released, yes I would.

Can you imagine the game you payed to develop ended up like deus ex 2 and you could only install it once or some bullshit like that. Yep.

And by funding for development they mean gatorade and cheese pizza.

OP beat our news post by about an hour but please use the thread in News and Announcements for further discussion.
