Help me catch up!!

Ok, my new computer just arrived, and christ did I need it. My old one was a 233mhz, 16mb ram from 1997 and obviously coudln't run any games. I don't want to miss out on anything, so could people please just post the best games that have been released since then. I've heard mixed views on Half-life series, Call Of Duty and Doom 3, so it would help if you could clear them up then write some more. Thanks a lot.

well for starters, get Half Life2!!
i haven't completed it yet (been very busy ) but so far it is damn impressive.

i have Doom3 as well and although i loved it...most pple here did not enjoy it as much... so don't expect too many pple suggestng to get it.

FarCry got very mixed reviews on this forum...some pple loved the game while others hated it.. got bored of it half way through.. not sure what to make of it.. but anyway i did not get this game

Bloodlines: we had a forum for this game until the staff'ers decided to get rid of it and just move the threads to another forum.
the game has bugs here and there but those who have played it say its a great game and they love it.
bottom line is if u can't deal with bugs, don't get the game.. Troika did release a patch for it but that hasn't fixed everything.

Call of Duty has an amazing SP
the MP is fun too but for myself, the SP campagns(sp?) really stood out so if u are interested in SP games.. this is a "must have" title.

.... and consider Chronicles of Riddick (better than Far Cry and Doom 3 [which are both still worth checking out] imo. Infact, so far i'm enjoying it more than HL2. Very pleasantly suprised)

Enemy Territory is a top online shooter - and free

Rome:Total War, if you're into strategy titles.

Dawn of War if you're into your more traditional rts (and am a closet WH40k fan)

World of Warcraft if mmorpgs is your thang.

Knights of the Old Republic - top Star wars rpg.

Neverwinter Nights (and expansions) - great multiplayer rpg which is still very decent in single player.

I personally can't stand CoD - script based fighting and its most tiresome (very much a point and click no brainer, with little questions asked of the player or skill required) But many seem to love it - so check out the demo

Definetly check out Mafia as someone pointed out already, as well as Max Payne 2. Maybe even Max Payne 1 first assumeing you haven't played it.

I suggest you start with older games and work your way up, because if you start with newer games right away you won't have any appreciation for the older ones, and you'll miss an entire couple years of gaming greatness.

I'm just going to reccomend FPS that i would play if i was you. If you want some non FPS to play then ask.

MUST PLAY:
Half-Life 1 - 2 (get HL2 it comes with HL1 and Counter-Strike)
Counter-Strike (you can play with 56k over the net)
Unreal Tournament 2004 (think 32 player bots in huge maps with cars and tanks & run's fast)

SHOULD PLAY:
Halo (large maps, fun fps - worth a play)
Medal of Honour (must play one of these games)
Max Payne 2 (First MP not as good)
Wolvenstine (it was the first v-sweet fps)
Quake3 (worth a play but UT2004 is 100x better)
