Help me find this series

I'm trying to dig up an old sci fi series I read the last book of. It was from the 90s or 80s I think, about a future where mankind was ruled by an artifical intelligence. They made it's primary objective to protect mankind, so it set itself up as an oppressive tyrant of sorts, and scattered people across the galaxy onto different planets with modified genetics. Some people find out that there is an override built into it, and that if they can collect five rings, they can shut it down. The machine has rules that require these rings to be accessible to humans, but it makes them very hard to get to. Umm... one of the people can change shape I think. And there are robots called sentinels that hunt them down.
