help me identify a sci-fi series

i don't remember much, but i think it was a pre-2000 (year) TV series. it was sci-fi, it resembled a lot like battlestar galactica but i think the focus was on ground combat. the enemies were also some kind of robots but i'm not 100% positive on that.

one scene i do remember pretty vividly...

so this squad of soldiers (marines or something) went into a cave occupied by enemy forces. some time within the come to a hole in the ground that leads to a lower level. so one guy is ordered to go down. first they threw in some grenades or something and then they lifted a man down feet first. halfway trough the guy gets his legs butchered by some enemy down that floor....and that's all i can remember specifically.

i'm pretty sure it was some robots they were fighting, but they were alien robots and it was ground combat not space.

any hints would be really appreciated.

Always in the ballpark for good scifi.

No worries. I must admit I believe I have this squirrelled away somewhere on a the HD for viewing down the line. Though first I have to finish off watching Wild Palms.

I was gonna say SAAB but it was usually set in space as the main characters were pilots
