OK, I have two problems with Half-Life 2. The 1st one is not really anything major, but i desperately need help with the 2nd one.

1. I hav'nt got very far in the game because of problem 2, so I dont know if this occurs throughout the game or just at the begining when you are in the train. My problem is that parts of the walls and floor are blocky and random colours, i fixed this by turning the video options down to the lowest settings. This is annoying because I brought the game for the graphics and the gameplay.

2. This is the worst problem because it makes the game impossible to play. After about 5 mins of gameplay, the game freezes for about 5 seconds and then restarts my computer. There is no error message, no blue screen, nothing to tell me why this is happening, except when my computer comes back on it says there was a serious problem with ATI (not sure what it means).

Someone please help me!!!!

Here are my specs:

Windows XP
Intel Celeron CPU 2.40 GHz
510 MB RAM
DirextX 9.0
ATI RAEDON 9200

1. Uninstall video driver, clean with Driver Cleaner and install new ones, 4.12 Omegas are the best imho, opt out of Reforce though because it it can lock up HL2 on some machines
2. Disable VPU recover and see if yr comp goes into hard lockups instead of reboots, if it does it's GPU problem because of failing PSU (most probable) or failing/overheating videocard.
3. Check minidump folder and debug the minidump file to get an idea what caused the failure.
4. Run Verifier.exe to check if there are any driver conflicts.

And so on...

...and welcome to the exciting world of HL2 many troubles

My CPU hits 47 degrees under a full load. It can't be a heat issue.

I can play Doom3, Call of Duty, and Far Cry for hours without any problems at all. As soon as I try Half-Life I get the boot.

It is a software issue.

I was referring to the first poster. If I had to make a guess in your case I would suggest that you relax your memory timings and see if that works.

I will give that another try tonight. Any suggestions as to what I should set them at?

Thanks for trying to help.

What are they set at now also what is the recommemed settings for your Memory?

P.S. Nice System!

The funny blocky colours are texture problems

validate your HL2 files HERE
That should sort that. The blue screen sounds like overheating problems still tho.

I think that Memory (Corsair XMS) is rated at 2,3,3,6 1T that's for one stick, when using two sticks the Timings are 2.5,3,3,6 1T (no Turbo) also make sure Fast Write is turned off for the Video.

I played with the RAM timings and just had the game lockup when I did the video stress test. The good thing is that it actually gave me an error. Here it is:

The driver ati2dvag for the display device \Device\Video0 got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates a problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly. Please check with your hardware device vendor for any driver updates.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

hhhhhmmmmmmmm, what should I mess with next? Could it be my video card messing up? Maybe the drivers I am using (version 5.1)? Could it be a glitch that for some unknown reason raised its head at the exact same time I was testing? I will keep at it and let you guys know.

Stay with the current Drivers. Is Fast Write off in the BIOS, also is the size of your onboard RAM for the Video set correctly? Try moving the slider in the ATI Control Panel to Quality for 3D and Open GL.
