I have another computer sitting next to me, i have my cable internet set up through a router, this computer is working fine, but the other one isnt. Ive tried 2 NICs, and switching the cables around. I've gone through the network setup wizard, and restarting, but nothing.

i just reformatted the computer too, it didnt work before, I though reformatting would fix it but it didnt.

its borked! help me! :imu:

windows tweaks out when you switch hardware components, especially nic cards.. only suggestion i can think of right now is to reformat, though there are tons of steps you can take, most of which are in your routers manual.

are you just sharing an internet connection or try to share files between to computers?

Plus, what operating system?

windows xp pro, trying to get both on the net, dont care about the network

Always try resetting the router.
Use "ipconfig /release" and "ipconfig /renew" in command prompt to reset your IP if you are having issues there.

Make sure you are not plugging the PC into an uplink port.

Check your router to see what IP addresses it can recongize. You may need to change it manually.

Update XP on both, then disable all firewall software then run the network setup wizard again - most firewalls deal with LAN traffic too and if you don't deal with them then things get blocked without you knowing.

Also you should check to make sure you have patch cables (not crossovers) running between the PCs and the router.

If your router is capable of sharing the net connection out, you should use that feature - disable all XP connection sharing, and give each machine on your network a custom LAN IP - eg. 192.168.1.100 for one, 192.168.1.200 for the other - and connect to the routers OS (telnet or http usually) and make sure you have this set up as the LAN gateway.

Also check the firewall privileges on the router to make sure both of these PCs can access all the net services you need.

Well, when i go to the device manager, "Ethernet Controller" is under "Unknown/Other Devices."
Maybe thats why? I just reformatted, maybe i have to get the motherboard driver before it will work online.

The only problem is, when i try to download the driver for the network card, it gets stuck at 3%

Can anyone try to download this for me, to see if it works?

the network one.

I've tried DLing it, same issue that you have. It doesn't even start in FireFox, and freezes at 3%. Can't find any mirror for the drivers either, sorry :(

SpuD, describe your setup. i need to know a couple of things before i can help you out here.

i had a similar problem to this a while back, but it was with wifi. this problem shouldn't be too different.

EDIT: it'd also help if you pointed out which router you're using, along with the current firmware you've got installed.

EDIT2:

1. see if both machines can ping the router.
2. see if both machines can ping eachother.
3. see if both machines can ping an internet address.
4. get your ISPs DNS servers and make sure both machines have the correct information.
5. check the IE LAN settings and make sure they're not using any sort of proxy (TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS>CONNECTIONS>LAN SETTINGS)

*you can ping be clicking START>RUN and typing in 'cmd'. once you get a command prompt, type in 'ping 192.168.0.1' for example. it should return some results.

damn 15 minute edit time...

i successfully downloaded that network app.

Network_PRO2KXP_only.exe 8.58 MB

PM me if you still need it.
