Hi,
My CPU has been running very hot lately, so I took off the hSF to clean out the dust. Taking it off & putting it back on gave me a hard time. So when i put the HSF back on..the pc only booted for 2 to 4 seconds then it shuts off ( but the power LED is still on on the front). I took the 1600+ out of the pc here and put it in mine. It did the same thing. Put the 1600+ back in its original pc, booted right up... I cant test my proc in this pc buecase the mobo cant handle it.

Also, the light on my mobo lights up when the power cord is in. i tried clearing the CMOS.

IGNORE MY SIG(that will be my pc come tuesday)...MY SPECS ARE
Athlon XP 2600+
768 PC2700
Radeon 9600 PRO
Asus A7V8X - X

Is the CPU fan plugged into the 3 pin CPU_fan header?
Remount the heatsink and make sure it's flush! If it isn't flush then it won't transfer heat hardly. Your CPU could overheat and auto-shutdown for safety.

Just double check everything. Can't really help ya more than that.

Did you put any new thermal paste on after you took your CPU out?

how hot can a processor get in 3 seconds of running? No I didnt put any on. But how in the world would that cause it from booting?

Yeah, not just in one spot but across the whole heatsink.
I would reapply the heatsink.

I just did that. I think I broke my motherboard. Good thing i have a new mobo and a new proc on the way! But Asus has a 3 year warranty so I'll mail it to to them and hopefully get a replacement

Asus warranty does not cover accidental damage just so you know.....

That warranty doesn't cover you breaking it, and even if they would replace it, it ain't fair. And people who return stuff they've broken is VERY fround uppon in the overclocking and pc community.

Okay, but why is it frowned upon?

well, make sure you put thermal sommething there! paste, tape, lube, whatever...something!

Returning stuff that you broke is frowned upon because computer hardware is really hard to break if you follow some basic rules. The computer I am writing with now can easily last 10+ years with some basic maintenance. When hardware breaks, it is usually because the person operating it wasn't following those basic rules or overclocking it.

Also returning broken stuff under warranty hurts the manufacturer. However, returning a motherboard for ESD isn't that bad but you need to be careful next time. I personally have a problem with people who try to return hardware that they broke when they were overclocking.

The motherboard is dead....I ordered thermal compound with my new processor. Arctic Silver Ceramique Premium High Density Thermal Compound to be exact. Because i hear the stock AMD64 HSF is pretty good with good thermal compound.

I once fried a ti4600 by overclocking it too far. I must have fried one of the memory modules as i had permanent artifacts all over my screen. As the card was only 2 months old i had to RMA it to get a replacement but in its current state i would probably just get it sent back at my own cost after they booted the machine and found it to be damaged through overclocking. So i took things into my own hands and set the clock sliders for both memory and core to the highest they would go and just left the machine to sit there and fry. After 5 mins the machine reset itself and wouldn't even get past the first stage of POST! How can they test an RMA graphics card to see if its user damage if it wont even POST? :E

4 days later i recieved a replacement ti4600 card through the post to find they had sent me a 2nd revision board that had VIVO over the original 1st revision board with just video in!

Damaging PC hardware like that then returning it is akin to buying a car and crashing it, then demanding your money back...

Yes its wrong but if they decide to give you the cash back then why not take up the offer?

Fine, allow me to rephrase. It is akin to trying to increase the capacity of the engine and killing it, then taking it back to them and saying it just died on its own. The warrenty does not actually cover it, so you lie to make it look like it was something it does cover. That is theft.

Great. Where do you live? I'll come and steal your computer, I could do with a new one. I'll be careful not to get caught so obviously you won't mind... would you?

Why is the mentality today "Its ok if I get away with it" and not "Thats wrong, so I won't do it" like it ****ing well should be. God people like you irritate me.

well im currently selling my ti4600 so if you're interested drop into #halflife2 on quakenet and we'll talk :)
