Hello,

Since being back from a holiday my computer has been acting strangely. It seems to 'Judder' all the time, even when only playing a single mp3. To best describe this, when i say drag a windows box i lose the feed for a milli second then it reappears, however i do not get a blue or black screen, just the same as the milly second before. It is not the video card I believe as this is everything. My music has the effect of pausing for a millisecond and then resuming.

I have taken apart my pc and dusted and put it all back accordingly and nothing seems to improve the situation.

Thank you in advance.

did this happen when u are connected to the net? Have u been having probs with ur ISP?

What r ur system specs? what was the last thing u did to ur comp (b4 u went on hols)

seems like u have alot of procceses running and its using all of the cpu

That can happen right when you first play the MP3 and it has not begun to buffer it. Have you defrag. your harddrive? Do you have 15% free space? What other background applications do you have? (Anti Virus live scanning?)

Specs:
Dell with P4 2.6 ghz
1 gig RAM
80 Gig hard disk (65.9 gigs used with 8.51 gigs free)
CD-RW drive
DVD ROM drive
Soundblaster audigy 2
ATI Radeon 9800

I dunno how to easily show all of my processes etc without using a hijackthis log?

It happens even when i unplugg my wireless card.

Thanks

Ctrl + Alt + Delete and look at the bottom of the Task Manager to see how many processes you're running and how much CPU they're using.

Well when just doing my usual msn plus music plus firefox my cpu usage is about 5% with system idle process using all the rest. However when watching all of the processes, when it judders the 'system' process uses about 15% of my cpu, but I don't know what that means.

I have cleared more room on my hard disk and defragmented but it has had no effect, I now have 21% free.

damn theres no many programs u need to delete from the startup menu and also winamp can take alot of cpu so i recommend closing that

Errm, I'm not sure i understand what you're saying. Winamp isnt causing the judders as it happens when playing hl2 etc.

if u have winamp open while ur playing halflife 2 it will prob. jutter

Okay i completely closed everything winamp related and played a track through both windows media player and itunes and still the juddering.

HELP!

HELP!

so ur playing a track running in the background through wmp and itunes while playing hl2?

No. When playing hl2 with NO BACKGROUND mp3's going the game judders the same as when i'm surfing the internet or listening to a song WHILE NOT PLAYING HL2.

If it is my hard drive, how would I be able to tell/test it?

Hmm does it make any strange mechanical noises when it's accessing? Otherwise the only other thing I can suggest is to swap it out for another one and see if you get the same problems, but obviously that would mean re-installing Windows and all your apps and files...

Dell usually use Maxtor for hard drives don't they.

go to www.maxtor.com and download PowerMax, burn it to CD, and use it about the same was as MemTest. Boot it and do a burn-in test on the hard disk. Give it a few hours. It will tell you if something is faulty.

If not, well then the problems somewhere else.

It's a hitatchi and I used hitatchi's tool and it didn't find anything wrong. So i'm back to square one :/

I know asus has already mentioned this, but have you defragged the disc?
