So i finally got HL2 but i didnt have a DVD-ROM drive so i used my other comps DVD drive and copyed it over to my PC via network(my pc is the better gaming PC) so i got it installed and i went to activate it on steam.......but........i need the DVD to be in my own comps DVD drive but as i havent got one i cant play!
is there any way to play without activating or activate it without the DVD being in my actualy PC?

take the dvd drive from the other pc to urs & u shud be fine.

also to mention that i am NOT aloowed to take it out of my other computer because its my mums and she dowsnt want to void the warrenty >_<

disable ur internet connection & then load up STEAM it will ask if u want to play offline, click yes. But im not sure u can play online without activating it first.

Id still take out the dvd drive, the manufacturer wont know its been removed, unless u dont fit it the same, which is hard cos dvd drives cant fit diagnally or upside down lol.

i could get my own DVD drive but then id have to get some money and a DVD drive in england costs about 20 quid!

[EDIT] Also could i play garrys mod 9 offline in the same way?

ooo Thank you very much :) you gets a whole barrel of cookies! thanks anyways :D

If you buy HL2, you can just type in the CD key into Steam, and download the entire game from there - you don't, in fact, even have to ever insert the CDs/DVD if you don't want to :).

umm...i go to play HL2 offline but it says "this game is not ready to be played offline"

Make sure steam has finished updating all your games before playing in offline mode

it just says there all preloaded but i have installed them all....but i want to activate and it says i need the DVD in the drive when i dont have a DVD drive!!!

Well it's obvious what you need to do. You must activate the game on your mother's computer by registering the cd-key with your steam account. Once done, if you log in on your computer on the same account it will let you play without any problems. However this means your mums computer requires an internet connection, does it have one? If not, you need to take her dvd drive walkies.

LMAO LOL omg that actually made me laugh.....i cant believe i didnt think of that before XD oh and the walkies thing made me chuckle....lol...walkies XD...oh god sorry i just needed to laugh at that...lol that was very good anyways thanks glenn ill try that

yai! it worked thank you!!!!!!!!!! you get a cookie filled with cookies!

okay sorry for the double post but it says its installed on my mums comp.....but it doesnt say its installed on my comp.....should i wait till its finished updating or????

Log out of steam on your computer or close it. Register the cd-key with your account on your mums computer and close steam after registration. You don't need to update the files on her computer because you don't want to play it on there. Do all the updating and stuff on your computer. When you log back into steam on your computer it should show it ready to play or update. Good luck.
