I have no dynamic shadows or soft shadows in Episode 2. I have all my settings turned to high, but the shadows can only go up to medium (no other option).

Also, objects are dissapearing to close to me. 30 feet away maybe.
How do I access the commands in my config folder and what is the command to change drawdistance?

Help will be greatly appreciated

My game's options say my card has directx 8.1 hardware, and directx 9 software. However, Im pretty sure my radeon 9600 comes standard with directx 9.

Click start, Run, then type dxdiag to go to the directX screen to verify you are running DirectX 9.0 anyways. If so, click the display tab to make sure all the DirectX features are enabled. There's a high probability your card doesn't support DX9.0 though.Computers don't lie (unless you have a trojan or virus that is). A Radeon 9600 is pretty old you know.

Radeon 9600 is a DirectX 8 card. It doesn't support DX9 features.

I thought so. I don't know much about ATI cards, but I had a feeling it didn't support DX9.0

Time to upgrade! Ask around and find out what the ATI equivalent is to a NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT card, since like I said, I don't know much about ATI cards. I'm an NVIDIA man.(maybe these guys can help). They are dropping in price significantly these days. You should be able to get one for less than $150 U.S. dollars and it'll have all the features that you need to run the game smoothly, including DX9.0 support.

weird, steam says i have directx 9 software. and my directx diagnostic tool says I am running directx 9.

I have an agp slot, will i have to get a new motherboard for a better card?

I also think my processor needs to be switched.

All I want is freaking dynamic flashlights in ep2. All my other games can run fine and I only paly steam games.

What is a good agp card? one that is under 200 and better than my radeon 9600?

Do i need to go into a different forum?

Kitty - they are wrong - you DO have a 9.0 directx card. I own a Radeon 9600 and actually IS A 9.0 CARD! It supports all the effects of the 9.0 library, but the lighting effect you want to get is only avaible in 9.0c libraries - Our cards are 9.0 and thats why you can't turn the dynamic lightin. STALKER for example uses this effect.

"The Radeon R300 (introduced August 2002) is the third generation of Radeon graphics chips from ATI Technologies. The line features 3D acceleration based upon Direct3D 9.0 and OpenGL 2.x"

Guys...if you're not sure of something read wikipedia or something, so you don't post something like you did - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radeon_9600 .

Ok, if you say so!:) I admit to being a little lazy. Just one question though, how do those Radeon 9600 cards perform? I suppose not everyone is picky about their FPS? I remember reading posts way back when Doom3 and DX:Invisible War was released, and folks were having trouble getting those Radeon cards to perform, and when HL2 was first realeased, people with 9600 and 9800 cards were bitching too. So were some folks who had GeForce 6800 Ultra cards. Just curious, you know?
