I just wanted to post this here in hopes of getting more views so people can know about this. The thread in the politics section Federal Court: FCC can't regulate Internet has more info, but I know a lot of people here avoid the politics section. Anways, the gist of it is that the courts just a few days ago stripped the FCC of all its regulating power over the internet, meaning Comcast/AT&T, etc now have full control over internet access without restraints.

A broadband company could, for instance, ink a deal with Microsoft to transfer all attempts to reach Google.com to Bing.com. The only recourse a user would have, under the ruling, would be to switch to a different provider — assuming, of course, they had an alternative to switch to.

Companies can also now prohibit you from using a wireless router you bought at the store, forcing you to use one they rent out — just as they do with cable boxes. They could also decide to charge you a fee every time you upgrade your computer, or even block you from using certain models, just as the nation’s mobile phone carriers do today.

They can also start selling internet access like they do with Cable TV, in package deals where you pay a premium for access to niche sites. Something like this isn't much of a stretch.

We need to get the FCC to move its ass to reclassify broadband internet as a Telecommunications Service so it will be protected under the Communications Act. In less than 48 hours comments from the public will no longer be accepted and they will make a decision. Please go here and send a (pre-written) letter to the FCC.

What he said, plus, only petitions from Americans count, right?

Good luck though.

if it does happen in America then other countires won't be long fellowing suit,

Also you forgot your link. GO HERE AND MAIL THIS PRE-WRITTEN LETTER: https://secure.freepress.net/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=437

Whoops, i'll edit that in.

This only affects Americans, right?

Its going to affect the entire world though. Any niche site hosted in the US, or even sites from other countries visited mainly by Americans will have their traffic drop to levels they probably can't survive off of, if ISPs do what they've been trying to do.

Yeah, unfortunately only people living in the USA can submit a letter.

My internet doesn't come from a big name company, so I don't think this would affect me. Regardless, I sent the message and also hit that small share button to paste it on my fasbuk.

I signed it anyways. The whole idea of charging for internet like cable service just sounds awful. Pay to shop for items on ebay and amazon? Give me a break.

:c

I'm in the UK so can't do anything, but this completely sucks.

To ensure the signatories are US residents.

No, it's actually a site set up by the ISPs so that they can get all people's addresses who are opposed to these services so that they can come in the night and kill you in your sleep.

Bet they bring knives to a gun fight.

haha! I feel sorry for the poor sap who ties that. ;)

I just signed it. If the Gov wants to find me they have other ways to do it.

I sent my email yesterday too. **** this.

I sent mine in last week, and one a few months ago, and a few months before that, etc. Can't hurt to send another letter, I guess.

Submitted. Also, for you US residents who really want to further the cause:

YellowPages + GoogleMaps. Yeeee

So is there any guarantee this website wont send me crap in my mail if I sign this?

You can easily block any emails it sends to you with gmail's easy to use filtering options.

They've used this system several times before to help people message their congressmen and the fcc, and I've used it a couple times now, starting over a year ago and I haven't gotten anything in my mailbox.

i meant my address

Oh, well all you have to do is install gmail to your mailbox.

Create a boot drive by extracting the gmail boot files onto a usb thumb drive, then just plug it into your mailbox and boot off of it. Your mailbox has usb right?

I've been using it for a few years. I've gotten an automated confirmation (we received your letter), beyond that, they have not sent me anything.

You forgot to tell him how dangerous this firmware is. If you install it wrong, your mailbox might start dropping packets.

I thought my internet couldn't conceivably get worse than the shitty Grande $40/mo DSL my apartment has all the residents locked into.

Despite my dislike of putting personal info through the internet, I went ahead and did this.

Lucky. I'm paying ~$50/month for Comcast. There was no other option, as Verizon does not have service to my apartment. It was either Comcast, or pay for land-line phone service and dial-up.

I tweeted this and Facebooked it. Hopefully people listen to this important message. Also like predicted, there will probably be a massive uprising but only after Net Neutrality is taken down

Also this:

Holy balls, déjà vu. Didn't we have like 3 of these threads already? All of them saying "hurry you only have 24/48 hours"?

I recognize the fact that this time there has been tangible progress made AGAINST net neutrality, but for some reason it seems like people really have no ****ing say in this matter.

We've had a couple threads for net neutrality when you only had a certain window of time to write in. This is another, for a different hearing. This is for reclassifying the internet as a telecommunications service which will allow the FCC to regulate it.

We ain't lost yet.

And we'll never truly lose. There is always mesh net.

I just wanted to congratulate you on this post. Nice job!
