Help: Takes me to death match

After latest steam download, I can't play game. If I click on icon for HL2, it takes me to Deathmatch. If I remove and load CD, and click on play game when menu pops up, it takes me to Deathmatch. I uninstalled game and Steam, then reinstalled. Same thing. Everything was fine before steam download. What can I try? Thanks for help. :bounce:

Do you mean a Desktop icon? It's possible the shortcut on the desktop is messed up. Does it do the same thing when you double-click on Half-Life 2 in the Steam window? Oh, and you don't need to have the CD in the drive to play, Valve removed that requirement months ago.

I was clicking on desktop icon. So, I loaded Steam, play games, and clicked on HL2, and it gave me this error message:

"hl2.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience..."

I went into the Steam folder and clicked on HL2 icon and got same error message?????

Odd. :| Have you tried doing a virus and spyware scan? Only other thing I could suggest is searching on the steampowered.com forums. Or maybe someone else on these forums has had this problem and could help, but I haven't.
