Hello, I have been playing HL2 with a game pad. It took a while to figure it out but I have everything workign for regular gameplay except for when Im driving a vehicle. The controls are reversed. Right to go left etc. I thought it may just be for the boat, but now that Im out of the mines etc. the car is doing the same thing. Anyone have any ideas? Here are the console commands I used to get the joypad to work:

joy_advanced 1
joy_advaxisx 3
joy_advaxisy 1
joy_advaxisz 4
joy_advaxisr 2
+jlook
joyadvancedupdate

I thought it may be the axis needs to be reversed but it works fine for walking around. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for sparing me the joystick lecture. I have read the joystick setup stuff. It works fine for normal motion/looking. The right stick controls motion and strafing, the left turns and looks. When I use a vehicle the axis for turning is reversed. It turns right when I turn left. I cant be the only one to have had this problem.

Tried submitting a question to Steam support? Though I believe you're right in thinking that you're not the only one to have ever had this problem, its not too far fetched to believe that Steam hasn't yet heard about the problem so that they can patch it or find a cure to put in the FAQ. Controller users are certainly a minority, and it's easy for their problems to slip under the radar.

Sorry, but why would you want to play with a joypad? Mouses give much more freedom.

Now now, I promised him we wouldn't give him the controller lecture he's probably heard a thousand times before :P

thanks for the info. I submitted a question via steam so hopefully ill have an answer by the end of the week.

As far as why I use the game pad as opposed to the mouse/keyboard combo it boils down to logistics. I play on a laptop. The computer is hooked up to my TV in my bedroom. I play in my bed most of the time and would need to buy some type of wireless keyboard/mouse to get it to work. I got the game pad as a gift for x mas so I figure I will just deal with it for right now. Plus ive been playing Playstation for years and have grown quite fond of their controller layout. Its not ideal, but I havent run into any problems yet. Except these damn bugs that kill me because I press left and turn right and hit a rock which causes my dune buggy to flip over LOL.

That's all fair enough :) It doesn't really sound like Keyboard / Mouse is an option, and I don't think anyone sane could recommend Laptop-keyboard / touch-pad over a controller. Hope Valve can sort it out for you :)

And just for the sake of flaming: Why would you want to play laying down on bed? It sure is an awkward position to be fighting in city 17...Sorry thought I should ask.:burp:

Has anyone come up with a fix for this problem? When I had HL2 installed acouple years ago, I seem to remember "fixing" this by creating a seperate "use" key for entering vehicles which reversed the axis as you got in/stepped out. This was a poor fix, but it worked. I hope Valve fixes this (or at least explains why it happens). I lost all my bookmarks in a reformat though, and don't remember how to do it.

fail on SO many levels. you bumped an almost 2 year old topic. a stupid topic. if you want to use a gamepad, buy a console.

his question was relevant to the topic of the thread, who cares how old it is? if it bothers you that much, don't post.

dick.

Wow, stewie. Exactly how many levels is "SO" many?

1. I played the game... 2 years ago.
2. Did I say I wanted to use a gamepad? Take a lesson from kupoartist, and think OUTside the box.
3. I use mouse for aiming, plus a CH Fighterstick for movement. While you are using at least three fingers for movement, I'm using... umm, NONE, and I don't have to touch the keyboard.
4. Which would you rather use to turn your car? The steering wheel - or the turn signal? That's the difference analog control makes to precision.

I found this: http://www.stevehailer.com/wiki/index.php?title=HalfLife_2 but something is wrong: I can't even acquire analog control, so I haven't even HIT the vehicle-steering-reversed problem yet.

I just bought HL2 and yes I prefer playing with the xbox 360 controller....even though the vehicles driving is reversed and the trigger buttons dont seem to work. I would like to know of a fix for one or both of these issues, but from what I am reading in this thread....you all seem to want to agrue about something versus replying with a fix (if one is known).

Technically, you're using your whole hand to move. :P
Also, the 360 controller, I don't believe, is completely compatable with the PC OB. Get the 360 version.

Or grab a Logitech game pad. The drivers set up automatically 'bind', if you will, to the keys you select. Also the joysticks can be mapped to the Mouse Y and X axis.
