Help with images

I have created and scanned in apiece of artwork that i would like to enter into the competition # 13 - it is about the same size as snowballs' entry except as a bmp file on paint it takes up 1mb, and i need it to take up 100kb.... what program can i save it on so it consumes less space? on paint if i make the image smaller it just gets all pixillated...
also, how do you make the image appear in your post NOT as an attachment? like some have here? i looked at the FAQ and it said to put [ img] [ /img] around the location of the file, but it didnt work.

I don't know about img tags, but how many pixels is the compo entry?
Try making it smaller and saving it as a gif or jpg.

i figured out the problem.... what happened was that my PC didnt save the file as a jpeg file if i named the file blahblah.jpeg, which is what i did, BUT BECAUSE MY PC IS A PILE OFF POO this didnt register it as a jpeg EVEN THOUGH IT SAID IT WAS!!!! so i have to select jpeg from the drop down list and not name my pic with a .jpeg at the end. stupid me
