Help With Memory Ram (im Newb)

i got dell dimension5100

it has 512mb DDR2 SDRAM (its 2 sticks 256mb each)

there are 4 slots.. 2 is taken (2 256mb)

I WANT TO BUY ANOTHER 1GB so its 1GB + 512MB

HOW????? im so newb (wat kind?)

DDR2 SDRAM PC-4200 i DONT GET IT!!!

first off ditch, the two sticks of 256mb. Having tons of different sticks of rams with all different timings doesnt work. Then just buy a stick of DDR2 PC4200 ram (1gb) or two for 2gb of you have money (buy the same one twice though) and stick em in the slots.

I dont really know much about DDR2 ram as I dont use Intel.

Yup, buy a dual channel kit of PC-4200 DDR2 ram, either 1gb kit (2x512mb) or 2gb (2x1gb) and get rid of the two 256mb sticks.

Go to newegg.com and look it up. I can do it later when im not so lazy but you have to buy dell specific RAM.

You could get 2 more 256 stick if you dont have a lot of extra cash to buy all new RAM.

I'm not sure if you can get mixed RAM...that is mobo specific. You might want to call up tech support and ask.

guys whats the difference between having a 1 stick 1gb versus a 1gb (2 512mb)

dual stick is better or just 1?.. and is it faster?
