Hi. This is not meant to be taken as an “I’m a dumb-ass with money to burn” thread but rather taken as a “could you help me out?” thread. I’ve been saving for quite some time now (around when HL2 was announced) The reason I’m posting these specs is to see if anyone can help me out and give advice on where I could spend less or dedicate more money too. So any way:

ATX Case LIAN-LI: PC-6070 Silent Aluminium Case
Power Supply: Top Power 420W ATX power supply
Processors: Intel Pentium 4 3.0G-C (800 MHz FSB)
Memory: 1GIG Corsair PC3700 / 466 TWINX KIT
Video Card: SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9800PRO Atlantis 256MB DDR TVO-DVI
Hard Drive: Seagate 120G 7200RPM SATA-150 8M Cache (3 year warranty)
CRT Monitor: 19" Samsung 955B
Speakers Cambridge: Soundworks 5300 Inspire 5.1 + Audigy DE COM
MB: Abit IC7-G 'Canterwood'

Also a few other questions does a 21” really affect the quality of the image compared to a 19”? And are 2 HDs connected through raid 0 really worth the cost for the performance?

PS: I had a hard time choosing an ATI over the NVIDIA  as I was a stubborn as hell NVIDIA Fanboy. I used to defend NVIDIA to death until recently the FX’s problems became so prominent l I suddenly I woke up and thought to my self Just because the have a good history doesn’t mean they are good now, so why am I defending this piece of crap?…

Edit: forgot the MB oops....

You can go with an Nforce 2 setup with a nice cheap amd processor, that would save you money at the cost of performence. You could also go with a 128MB radeon 9800 pro to save some cash.

Another one converted, ALL PRAISE ALLMIGHTY COMPUTER GODDESS PIXEL! 010010000100000101001100010011000100010101001100010101010100101001000001!!!!!!

Concerning the computer itself: Why need more? That is good enough (actually, its extremely good :)). And you dont really need a 21 incher... A 19 incher is pretty big. Of course, if you plan to spend alot of time in front of it, get a good big screen. I used to play on a 17 incher, then I... uhm... acquired... a 21 incher from my fathers work. Its... BIG :)

But the most important part: Whats its main use? You wouldnt need all that memory for just gaming. But it might be good to have it if you intend to use CAD or other complex 3D modelling.

It's all for gaming and to future proof it for a year or so. (thats how long my current one lasted me: 1900+, 512ddr266,Ti4400). What do you guys think of AMD at the moment? ( I know I sound like a noob.......I'm not....)

Edit: I plan to spen a MASSIVE ammount of time in front of it!

AMD is okay for now in my opinion because of the price alone, im not a big fan of them but since i cant afford a pentium 4 ill go with them. If i break my processor its only 47$ to replace hehe.

Dear lord. I had a 700/Geforce DDR until februari this year, when I upgraded :)

If you upgrade this often, then dont even bother with 1gb ram. Or even a 3ghzer. Hell, I would hardly advise a 9800 Pro.

I would go with a 2.4c (easy to overclock, worth the little extra over AMD I suppose), good mobo (dont know Intel mobos), 512mb memory (semi fancy, not the slowest, but no need for the fastest) and a 9800np and keep the old harddrive. ALOT cheaper and will easily last you a year.

That would last me 6 months :dork: ...... seriously though I would keep the other one for quite a while.

The Athlon64 will be released this month and prospect is that the "slowest" version of the processor will outrun the 3Ghz at ease in games.

Maybe worth the wait?

maybe. I was planning to get this towards the end of the year anyway...

Wasnt it the 1.8ghz that measured up to intels 3ghz? :)
I cant remember.
