Help with web hosting info

As a way for me to display any work I do as well as build my experience with Web design I have decided to start my own website. However I am completely new to the whole thing.

I know what I need with HTML, Java script, FTP's etc.

I have registered the domain I want and am currently looking around for a decent host. So far I have decided that my best bet is with these guys:

The price they show seems decent and they have all the features I want but then again I know very little about the whole process.

Has anyone heard anything bad about Bravenet? Are there often any hidden costs that would make me pay more than $6 a month? Any tips you guys could offer?

Bravenet used to be really cool for free hosting of different things, but, I haven't checked them out in awhile.

I created a website for my sister's company, used www.lowesthosting.com ... fast server, unlimited FTP, unlimited bandwith, unlimited e-mail accounts/forwarding accounts.. PHP, mySQL, the list goes on, only downfall is 50MB of webspace on their cheapest plan.
