Help

This is an academic version. If you are a student, you can find MOST software at rock bottom prices.

To add, academic/student licences often include no commerical usage, which could possibly include work on mods also, since to an extent that could be considered commercial in some ways. Also for some student licences, to be elligable you have to be in specific courses, otherwise you can't buy them. Depends on the app/company and just telling them your on some course doesn't work, they check up on claims.

As for PS vs Max.. well depends what you need to do doesn't it. 2D or 3D. If your happy with Paintshop pro, stick with that and get max, otherwise get Photoshop.

Well I am a student. What is the difference between this and the "real" version, if any? And Fen if you read the link I posted it say K-12 eligible.
I am in 8th grade. I really want 3DS Max I just don't want to pay $3500 for it.

no difference, other than if you try do anything commercial with a student licence, you can get in serious trouble.

Depends on what school your a student at, I dunno what Discreet's deal is, but if its like the others you have to be at a certain school/course otherwise it wont apply to you.. Course Discreet might be more open about it, but I know the others aren't.

Well you must be proud of yourself!

nah, he's not proud. he's a creationist, he believes the warez was ordained unto him by devine providence.

I want to use this for my MOD. But , why would I get into trouble? I payed for it, just not as much. It's not like I warezed it. *looks at creationist* I will not warez it. I really don't want to get into law trouble at the age of 13. :\

Well, If your not gona sell your mod (I mean if its for HL2 or sumthin)
then its not for commercial use is it?

Thats a guess btw.

But if i am right then i dont think you need to worry.

But at thirteen I don't think you should be spending so much money on software that advanced. Unless your very gifted (I am not doubting you) you might possibily find it imposible to use.

All I am saying is be carefull.

You won't get into trouble, even if valve released it as a comercial game they have a license for 3dsmax and could give you one if the law required it.

i bet alot of mod makers arn't even useing a legal OS, never mind legal 3d software.

Well I am using the trial version at the moment. Quite easy by the way, pobably since I have been using gmax for 1.5 years now. I want to upgrade because .gmax* files will not load because fo the new HotFix patch. I don't plan on selling the MOD either. It probably won't even be good enough for you guys to want to play it. Oh, and I am not spending the money, my Mom is. :) :D

lucky sod!

I errr mean Good For You!!! :)

Wish I could get my mum to spend that kind of cash!
Might have a car by now if I could! :p

yeah well creationist is already in enough trouble, and i don't mean on this forum, I wouldn't suggest anyone follow his example.

As for why you'd get in trouble, well for a start your not buying the software, your buying a licence to use it, and the academic/student licence 9/10 does not allow you to use it commerically. Simple as that, I really don't see whats so difficult to understand. When you pass a driving test, that licence only allows you to legally drive certain types of vehicles. This is no different.

to wit, as long as you don't sell the product of your work, you're in the free and easy. of course you would definitely want to check on the legalities of that with the company that makes the oftware in question (though they'd probably knee-jerk and say no, get the whole story from them if you're really concerned about it).

Fen, you are basically saying that if my MOD is a hit or a bomb, and I use the Student version of 3DS Max I will be sued?
And to Marksman, it's more like an early Christmas gift.

still, I dont get that much spent on my at christmas or birthday.

Meh, she just bought this tank of a PC. I definatly shouldent complain really. :)

Well, supposedly this is all I will get for Christmas this year. By all means I am NOT spoiled.

my mom only gives me hot coals for christmas. which is actually not bad, considering how cold it gets out here in the spare dog-house.

lol, stop it. I am drinking coffee here. He might choke on his cola but I dont want to singe anythin vital!!!

Oh and, I don't automatically assume if anyones spoilt. All depends on their situation. :)

Spoilt children are the ones you see comeing into collage in there own brand new car yet don't have a job.

The only ones who could have a job right when they went off to college are the ones who already lived in the area...
