Alright i need sum help here my freind is about to go blow almost 1700 (Australian dollars) bucks on a new comp the whole lot. Now to me 1700 bucks isn't gonna b enuf to get a computer that isnt goin to b obsolete the minute he turns it on. He wants a monitor a case, speakers, and the rest (cpu, mobo, ram, video card etc) wireless networking sollution (he needs sum help choosing which one cause i hav no idea about networking) This guy seriously has no idea and is rushing in without doin his hw and with new technologies just around the corner eg PCI-express in a couple of years his comp will b barely able to play anything and he will have to buy a whole new comp because everything will be based on PCI-express, BTX etc etc.

SO can sum1 suggest a good setup incorporating all these components that will come in at about 2000 dollars (AUD) or should he wait a cuppla months.

Thanks

tell him to stop. or slap him. or let him do what he wants.

You are posting in the wrong form. Please evaluate the options before posting a new thread.

..but IMO, $1200US ($1700 AUS) could buy a pretty sweet rig if the guy knows what hes doing. $400 mobo/cpu, $400 vidcard, $200 ram, +$200 for whatever else he needs. You could get PCI-X and DDR2. Of course thats piecing it together, and using scrap (CD Drives, monitor, kb, mouse) from the old computer

go out to a bar, meet a guy who sells computers for a living, get a discount.....factory direct blkah blah......then you can basically get a ati x800 for free.......

Where abouts in Aus, i could suggest a few places in perth to go looking.....

oh, like computer salesmen hang out in BARS...jeez, yogi...

Well.......i forgot about that...... i wondered why i never meet any before?????

Nah, i just know some that supply computers to my dad's company so i can order through them, so when they bulk order i can get a discount.....

If you throw me a super-da-luxe australian barbeque, i'll give your friend a discount.
Hmmm australian barbeque :E

u would get more help had u posted in the Hardware & Software section of this site.
anyway.. the first question i would ask is, is ur friend the type who likes to upgrade every few months or year? if not.. then he probably should save up a bit more and get higher end components.

of course if he is desparate and really needs a decent comp.. then i guess get whatever he can afford.. but if he can wait a bit, he should and save up.

hell YEAH!!!!!!! I'll give you a barbeque..... in tha post......

each week for only five easy payments of $9.95 you get a litle socket wrench and a screw and after 100 weeks you have an entire barbeque in lotsa pieces...... without a manual on how to put it together......

BTW: nice bbq's are about $400AU...... decent ones $200+

Super psycho ones with neon lights...like those "oo look at my comp threads......" are like 800+ and do not exist......

Damn.....i just emailed AustraliaPOST and they said that they can't post the grill..... oh well......

actually we're cellebrating our cricket season with a barbie 2nite got the garlic prawns, plenty of snags, bacon, steaks marinating nicely in the fridge more snags and satay chicken kebabs b-e-a-u-tiful lol fly down and u might b here in time for the left overs and the warm beers lol

And here I thought that you were suggesting trading sexual favors for hardware.

Ahh, thats too bad..all we have here are these lousy german scheisse barbeques that never get hot enough. Maybe I'll find a import shop that had decent ones.
Man, barbeque can be so super tasty, but it's generally associated with charcoaled meat with raw interior, because we use those damn german deathtraps. :|

i just built this computer for $1200 (look below) and i have a great frame rate in counter strike souce (in the 60 to 100 range) with all the setting almost maxed.

tell him to sacrifice something......but 1700 is quite a bit and he should be able to get a pretty decent computer......

either get an awesome graphics card now... and not as much like sound stuff like dont waste yuor money on audigy2,,,,, 5.1 surround and stuff... just get 3.2 gHz, 40gb hdd or less...(who needs HDD space anywayz), and an ati x800 raden or a geforce 6800 gt.....and then some ram.....512 will be enough and he can upgrade ram easily later...... and dont waste your money on a screen.......just buy one out of the quoka.....

this reminds me, there is this commircal on tv where you pay this companey $25 a week for a year ($1200) for a really crappy computer thats maybe worth $300. it just piss me off just because they make it out to look like such a great deal. that poorer people that dont know about computers will buy it.

Yep.....so true....... and they hide viruses behind trees!!!.....

You know it was the democrats that introduced that.....no wonder they had no luck in our election just passed......

Just don't go buying something like a Dell or Fujitsu or Sony or any other large manufacturer, they mostly use custom components and you'll have hell of a job trying to upgrade it. Best to find a smaller company building from off the shelf components. I've always built my own PCs, you don't save much money that way, but you get exactly what you want.

Aah, oke, I was a bit confused by you first post.
Dell is fine for the people that do not know anything about computers and just want one that 'windowses' and 'words'.
On the other hand, as you said, they throw in things that you might not need, and therefore do not want to pay for.

I think it's just a case of just how much you know of computers, when you know exactly know what components you want, its far cheaper and better to build your own pc, or have it done for you.
If you just want a working computer that runs out of the box, you might want to concider dell.

Oh and thanks for understanding my barbeque mischief!
