I've been mapping for the Unreal series for about six years, and mapping and programming professionally using it for a little over three years. Right now I'm an independent contractor, although if everything goes right next week I'll be Lead Level Designer at a small company in Oregon.

I've decided to expand into other editors, and Half Life 2 was the obvious choice. So, once again, I'm a noob. This seems like a great place to hang out and jibberjab about mapping though, so hopefully I'll be up to speed and making maps for you soon.

Hello there, welcome to halflife2.net, it's safer here. Are you familiar with Hammer yet in SDK? Hope you find the map making as fulfilling as unreal's scene. :)

Look out for Willie, he'll Peniiown yo ass!

:p

I used it a looooong time ago for about six months for the original Half Life, then switched to Unreal Tournament 99's editor when that came out. I loved the WYSIWYG 3D viewport in Unreal's editor, are you able to see what the lighting will look like in the new Hammer? So far I've only spent a little bit yesterday getting used to the camera movement.

Unrelated story: When playing Ghost Recon with my friends, I'd hold down left trigger to bring up the map over the entire screen during a firefight and shout "MAP TIME!".

Good times.

There's an option to preview lighting, but it's not necessarily what it'll look like after compile.

Hammer's pretty easy to pick up, especially if you've been mapping professionally with UnrealEd. Our resident mapping expert Raeven0 is a good person to PM if you have questions about anything :D

Woah... the Angel Mapper?! :O Your UT2004 maps were entirely legendary (all readers of this thread with a copy of UT2004 are hearby ordered to play these maps if they haven't already. Go!). DM-Reconstruct was really an eye-opener... I don't honestly believe I've been quite as amazed by something a non-professional did, and standing out in the CBPs alone was quite a feat. Shame it never really caught on with the ForceSkin crowd, but then if they had their way Unreal Tournament games would be played in grey rectangles with a low ambient hum playing constantly in place of a soundtrack... Sure, the Half-Life community has its own philistines (SMod lovers and Garry Porn makers, I'm looking at you), but I like to think that you might just get a little more recognition in the HL community. Well, unless they scare you off too soon. Hell knows I'd be a bit edgy with some of these replies (of which I suspect mine is actually the most scariest when you think about it :p )

Thank you! I don't know about legendary, I just try and make things unique. :) Hopefully it won't take too long to learn how to map and program for HL2, seeing a new editor and programming language is always a bit disorienting at first though.

Lo Angel.
Hope you don't forget UT 2004 entirely :stare:

And yeah, your UT productions are almost legendary... where would we be without your anual festive add-ons such as the halloween masks and santa hats (hint hint)

Heheh. Alright, I'll cook something new up for Christmas this year. :cheese:

Wow! I remember you from the UT2004 forums... you were a legend!

*sniff* I loved that map...

May I use your life energy to fuel my eternal eeeeeeevil soul?

Just call 1-800-Fun-Sith

WRONG WRONG WRONG. I Shall Use The Force To Siphon AcePilots Soul!

Sorry, I am wearing Force-Resistent robes. Have fun giving yourself a headache.

I foresee all.
And all foresees me.
I have no idea what that means.

Lay off! They're already using my soul to power the hidden cameras in your houses. :frown:

I remember when I had Leo as my avatar so many <time> ago.

Those were the days, I think we had the HL2.net Arena comic at the time, and I had the rat-flail. :3

Angel mapper, Spider steroids, angel mapper?! :O
<3 that mut.

Reconstruct is definitely a beauteous map, I love the Shodan-esque face in it.

Welcome to rehab.

Welcome!

You should also leave your avatar as 1 Aeries, and not change it... or you could ignore me.

I usually rotate through a bunch that I have based on my mood. It'll always be an Aeris though. :p
