1) Never ask to be a moderator, try to be a moderator, or even seem like you want to be a moderator.. doing so will mean that you are labeled as power-hungry, devisive, manipulative, or misintentioned. For example, I wouldn't pick you as a moderator now, because you've only just joined the site and you're already asking.
2) Well known in community
3) Responsible and mature poster
4) Accountability for your actions
5) Preferrably been around for a long time
6) Being in a good timezone O)
7) Good knowledge of forum topics
8) Free time
9) An honest, decent attitude, anything else tends to show through and the users never end up respecting you.
