High loss in CS and CS:S with new computer

I just built a new computer (GIGABYTE Motherboard, 3.0GHZ HT, 800MHZ FSB, 1.0GB DDR Ram, Sapphire ATI Radeon 9800 Pro). Whenever I play CS or CS:S I get high losses (30-40) that make the game pretty much unplayable.

The weird thing is, if I use WinXP's internet connection sharing and play on another computer (through the new computers connection) the other computer has no loss.

I can't figure out what could be causing this since the fact that the other computer works proves the internet connection is working fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hmmm, well you could fiddle with your rates. Or check if you have the WinXP firewall activated, and do you have SP2?

I've played with the rates. I got rid of any choke, but they don't affect the loss problem.

I don't have SP2, would it be good or bad to try installing it?

You could give it a try, and if you don't like it you could always do a system restore. And I'm not an expert on networking and connections but packet loss if it isn't server side is usually due to a firewall or the ISP to my knowledge. I'll bump the thread for you so a tech wizard can see it :)

Keep playing around with your rates, and check your background proccesses.

Maybe I'll try SP2.

The weird thing is that I copied the SteamApps directly from computer to computer and I can play on another computer that's using the new computer's internet connection with Win XP's internet connection sharing.

Thanks for the input though!

I have started having huge loss recently as well. It goes to about 40 in loss. But not always. Pisses me off. It wasn't like this a few weeks ago.
I've been playing with rates but nothing helps.

I hope it helps when I get my new ISP.

I've also noticed a dip in my FPS playing CS:S at times on my Sapphire 9800 Pro. I still get a normal FPS of around 70-80 with all high detail and nothin extra but at times I can dip to about 30 FPS. It's playable but I don't like it.

I wonder why there are so many people always getting fps drops in CS, it's weird.

My FPS stays great, but the loss makes my actual movements really jerky. It feels like having a really high ping. The FPS stays constant though.
