Many people have had problems with having their pings skyrocket in HL2 games and mods. The two main reasons for this are:
:: A firewall. (disable it. many people found this to be causing the high ping.)
:: The resolution. (go to options/video, and change your resolution settings.)
My problem was with the resolution. I have a 26 inch monitor of an aspect ratio of 16:10. So thats what i had changed it to in the video options. Turns out, for some reason that would make my ping skyrocket in-game. I went into video options and changed it back to 4:3 1600x1200 and now it works perfectly fine. Rather than having a ping between 300-1000, it now stays within 50-100. Im not sure why exactly the aspect ratio was the cause of the problem, but it was.
