Hint brushes

Ok ive read many a tutorial on the use of hint brushes but they all talk about small enclosed rooms and corridors. Now my map is a large open cityscape map and im unsure of how to properly use hint brushes. If anyone can give me some ideas that'd be good! :dork:
 
I think really all you can do in big open spaces is "box out" the large areas of relative openness. But all it will do is cut compile time some.
If you look at sdk_d3_c17_13 you'll see that about every 128 units high there is a hint brush. So like in your map find about the maximum hieght that the player can go normally and set that area off with a hint brush. Whether or not you want this height to go across the whole map is up to you, and I don't know if it would really help you or not by doing so.
