This is probably old news to alot of people, but I've only just heard of it. There is a film being made of Northern Lights (The Golden Compass). It's a fantastic series of books and the film is being done by the same studio as The Lord of the Rings film. I hope they don't **** it up.

Me neither. I'm so sure if they strike the right tone with that trailer, but the casting is pitch-perfect.

I don't like how their trying to market it like the second LOTR. The books were very different and I expect the films to be just as different.

Huge fan of the books, but I liked the trailer and I hope they don't **** it up.

Why do they rename books and put cheesy names on for Americans.

I enjoyed the books too - fingers crossed :)

Church might go a little apeshit on this. :p

But probably not.

Hope it goes well.

According to Wikipedia, they're removing religious references. How they hell they can manage the third book without those I have no idea.

holy shit...those books were awesome....i read them years and years ago. I hope its good.

??!

That can't be true. I mean, as you said, you can't remove reigious references without completely changing the entire story/feel of the books.

'Instead of angels fighting let's have big robots'!

Bag of shite.

I've just finished reading the trilogy again. If they rape this, I will rape them.

The ending of Amber ****ing broke my heart into a million pieces. ;(

I'm looking forward to this I just hope they dont **** it up.

Narnia sucks don't mention that crap.

Polaris, you'd love the books.

Sorry about that, I don't like Narnia either. Now I remember, my friend from high school have all three books, maybe I will get them. Story sounds very good and I'm impressed by detailed universe with deep terminology.

His Dark Materials is great and pisses all over LOTR in terms of both dramatic/narrative effectiveness and artistic meaning.

So if this film fails, I will kill someone/everyone.

Also I believe the 'taking out religious references thing' is a lie but am not sure.

Well, the "That is heresy" in the trailer thinks otherwise.

****ing truth.

For all that don't know:

These are pretty good ones.

I enjoyed Northern Lights, but I found The Subtle Knife too boring to even bother finishing, and it's a pretty short book. I just felt that everything of interest had been exhausted by the conclusion of the first book. Mind you, I'm not exactly fantasy's biggest fan these days.

I saw it last night. It's good but I found some things just bothered me. I found the style of Lyra's Earth to be far too fantastic, in the literal meaning of the word. They have gyroscope-powered carriages. The Lyra-is-chased-by-the-gobblers scene seemed a bit daft to me too be honest and whenever you saw a crowd of people there just didn’t seem to be enough daemons around. Also, it ends earlier than the book does, and thus on a much more hopeful note. I also liked the whole "you can't trick a bear" thing which is left out of the film.

It was a good film, all-in-all, perhaps not great, although maybe that’s because I’m comparing it to the book.

I liked it, but then again I've never read the books. Im sure If I picked it up I'd probably have a few problems with it which is the case with any book I read thats been turned into a movie.

From who? :)
I hope it will be OK.

The Catholic League needs to ****ing die. Bill Donahue should be plunged into molten lava.

I'm a huge fan of the books, and I think Pullman's story is absolutely wonderful. I'm doubting this movie because from what I've seen Weitz just didn't have the vision to convey it to screen, and it's simply a watered down and empty movie.
