Since one has to register their game with valve using the game product (cd key) and get a username and password to use the software, how could I sell or give the game away to someone when the ID I have is registered to me?

If you already have a copy of HL2 the orange box provides a second copy wich you can give away to someone using a special feature of steam. You may not however, sell it.
