Now I've had a chance to get as far as Anticitizen, am I in a position yet to make a fair comparison? I hope not. Maybe I'm getting older and have different priorities, but right now I've got to say that HL2 is good but not that good. 
By comparison when I originally got HL, one night I said to my wife "Goodnight, I'll be up in a minute." Next minute she's at my shoulder saying, "Gosh, you're up early - that game must be good."
In fact I'd go so far as to say that the best ever was the original HL demo. There's the possibility that familiarity breeds contempt and that Valve's delay in producing a sequel just heightened my expectations a bit too far. The extra year's delay didn't help. Without getting too arty-farty I think HL2 loses something in its newfound realism. Ever heard of the guy who said that Picasso was good, but he couldn't make out what the pictures were? In the same way I prefer the graphic simplicity of HL, which left so much more to your imagination. And there's the rub - it's your imagination that any game must appeal to.
Nevertheless, HL2 is good - very good possibly. But IMHO there will never be another HL.
I'd be interested to see how many will shoot me down in flames and how many might sympathise with this view - if only to a degree.
P.S. Since I'm only at Antizitizen, please tell me I can still look forward to Zen Mark II!!!
