HL suddenly won't work!!?

SHORT VERSION I was playing HL when I decided to put my res up to 1600x1200, I did that and Steam complained that my current mode (D3D) didn't accept my new settings, it reverts to software mode @640x480x16 and tells me to restart the game. I restart the game, and it gets into the HL front screen for a sec and then gets out!! What do I do? All the other games work...

LONG VERSION Okay, I was playing through HL single player again, to refresh my memory for HL2, and was doing real good. When I am near the end of Level 5 "On a Rail" where the two grunts are talking about Freeman, and you get to listen; right before you launch the satelite, and I decide to put the resolution on my monitor to 1600x1200. Why not? As soon as I do Steam complains about "my current mode" (d3d) not accepting my new settings, so the game reverts back to software mode at 640x480x16 I try getting back in and it gets in for a sec, and then closes back to windows....!!!?? I tryed changing the settings in my different games, which ALL work except for HL, to see if that would fix it, and of course they didn't.... this sux. I was going to play through the night and save the world again and now I have to wait for some nice people to reply.

PS: I added the short version after I saw how rediculously long the long version is.

I've had that problem many times, and the only way that I know how to fix it is to load up hl and really quickly hit options and a lower res setting... you've gotta be fast

I just tried that, it doesn't work because the menu items won't even highlight...? I can change the settings in other games, and steam uses the same settings for all of them, but even after changeing it it still does that same thing; get in for a sec and then get out back to the desktop.
